Thanks to Autocar, there’s a new video of the Subaru, Prodrive, Subaru Tecnica International (STI) 2016 WRX STI Time Attach car breaking the IOM record. It was driven by Mark Higgins to a scorch the old record and gets a new car lap record at the Isle of Man TT course. This was done on Saturday. Autocar just released the new 5 minute clip of the record run. Scroll down to page 2 to see the video.
Subaru hasn’t released any details on the 2016 WRX STI Time Attack car, but Autocar says the STI is pumping out 600 horsepower. It also gets a modified suspension, new aerodynamic sheet metal and a huge wing on the back to keep the purpose-built sedan stable at the high speeds. Higgins shatters the record by hitting top speeds of around 170 mph around the 37.73 mile course. Higgins lapped the course in 17min 35.139 seconds, at an average of 128.730 mph.
Running new Dunlop Sport Maxx BTCC tires
It wouldn’t have been possible without the new tires Prodrive and STI is running. They shod the 2016 WRX STI with Dunlop’s medium compound Sport Maxx BTCC race tires. They aren’t street legal and they provided extra grip for the STI to stay on course at an average lap speed of 128.73 mph. That was up from the previous record of 116.47 mph set by Higgins on the road-legal meats he ran in 2014.

Watch the video and see how stable the WRX STI Time Attack car is at the incredible speeds. Higgins is able to take corners at super-high speeds and the tires kept their grip without slipping.
Mark Higgins broke the lap record at Isle of Man TT Road Course in the new one-off 2016 Subaru WRX STI. Subaru is evaluating whether to make another attempt on Friday to top the record again. Can Higgins go even faster? Stay tuned.
