The new 2024 Subaru Legacy is up and down, and it's Subaru's most challenging model to figure out. I cover the midsize sedan's sales report monthly. To start the new year, the 2024 Legacy is only one of three Subaru of America nameplates that are up in percentage of sales.
The hot Forester is up 24.8 percent, Legacy is next, up 17.5 percent, and Outback rose 8.5 percent to start the new year. All other nameplates are down in January.
Legacy by the numbers
In January, Subaru of America reported it delivered 1,492 midsize sedans to its U.S. customers. That's a 17.5 percent increase from January 2023, when 1,270 Legacy models were sold.
As I said last month, will Subaru Corporation discontinue the Legacy midsize sedan? Probably not.
The Legacy is an excellent vehicle with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive and all-weather capability, new technology inside, comfortable ride quality, and the latest safety tech, and it gets the highest safety scores.
MY TAKE
I recently covered an updated study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) that says Subaru has two models that rank low in customer satisfaction: one is the 2024 Subaru Legacy midsize sedan.
The Subaru Legacy scored low in “Usability.” CR says owners say the Legacy’s controls were why they rated their vehicle low.

The 2024 Subaru Legacy midsize sedan has had issues with its infotainment system. The touchscreen is new, and Subaru needs to make it easier to use. Because an older demographic typically purchases the Legacy, the controls must be more straightforward.
What's next for the 2025 Legacy?
Subaru is expected to give the 2025 Legacy sedan a complete remodel. But don't expect radical changes. Subaru Corporation has always kept its next-generation models much the same in exterior styling.
Most of the upgrades will come underneath the sheet metal. The new 2025 Legacy will have improved ride quality with suspension upgrades, new infotainment inside, and the next-generation EyeSight driver assist safety tech.

Subaru of America has yet to release details about the next-generation Legacy. I am speculating that the 2025 Subaru Legacy could get a new hybrid trim level. Subaru will offer a new 2025 Forester hybrid trim and will likely do the same with the Legacy.
I will bring you the next-generation Subaru Legacy details as soon as Subaru of America makes the announcement.
The 2024 Subaru Legacy starts with a bang for the new year. The midsize sedan is Subaru's most complicated model to figure out.
