Why The New Subaru WRX Is Now Looking Up To The Aging Impreza

The 2023 Subaru WRX had the second largest percentage of increase in sales last month, and the WRX is still way up for the year. See why the Subaru is looking up at the aging Impreza compact car.

Which Subaru model had the most significant percentage of sales increase last month? The 2023 Subaru WRX is close to returning as the hot model for Subaru of America. Unfortunately, the next-gen Subaru WRX is looking up at the aging Impreza compact car with its massive 112.7 percent in April. Still, the WRX was up an impressive 78.2 percent and the second best-performing carline for Subaru of America.

Still, the Subaru WRX is selling better than expected. The WRX is also the second-best-selling new sports car in America. The Chevrolet Corvette only outsells it. Moreover, the 2023 WRX sales this year reveal a resurgence of optimism for the sport-tuned sedan.

2023 Subaru WRX

Subaru of America reports they delivered customers 2,667 next-generation 2023 Subaru WRX performance models. The WRX had another significant increase over last April 2022, when it had 1,497 sales when Subaru Corporation switched to the new model. The WRX is now up 395.7 percent in the first four months of 2023.

Subaru of America delivered 10,276 WRX performance sedans to customers in 2023, compared with 2,073 in the same period of 2022. However, the Impreza still has more total sales, with 12,398 compact cars sold in 2023.

2023 Subaru WRX

If the upward trend continues, Subaru of America is now on pace to sell nearly 31,000 WRX performance models to U.S. performance customers. And that's without the high-performance WRX STI in the lineup.

But the next-gen Impreza hatch is coming, and it could be the hot model for Subaru of America. But, of course, if WRX had a hatchback, it could be a different story.

What's next for WRX?

Subaru Corporation is preparing to move to a new generation of performance models. The Japanese automaker is not giving up on its performance division and racing partner, Subaru Tecnica International (STI). Subaru will return the WRX STI in an all-new, all-electric performance model called the STe.

Subaru dropped the WRX STI when the next-generation 2022 WRX was launched around the globe last year. As a result, the 2021 WRX STI was the last gas-powered STI, and Subaru began preparations for the all-new electric STI, now to become the STe from Subaru Tecnica electric. The WRX was up an impressive 78 percent last month, only to be bested by the aging Impreza. However, the next-gen WRX looks up at the Impreza before the new hatchback arrives.
