The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is set to get a complete remodel, and there will be significant changes coming, but will they be enough? The refreshed 2023 Legacy Sport now comes standard with Subaru's FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, where it was only offered with a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated (non-turbo) engine before.
Subaru updated the refreshed 2020 Crosstrek subcompact SUV with the 2.5-liter engine, making a significant difference in horsepower (30-hp). Customers responded by buying record numbers of the Crosstrek Sport.
The next ask Subaru of America needs to make of Subaru Corporation is to now offer its U.S. customers the third-generation Crosstrek with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine upgrade like Legacy Sport.
The upgrade would make a significant difference in its performance for active customers
The Crosstrek with the FA24 turbocharged engine would produce more robust performance for active customers who use the subcompact SUV for camping and hauling outdoor gear. The 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque would allow the Crosstrek to pull a small trailer and carry additional equipment without a struggle.
It would be a significant upgrade over the current Crosstrek Sport's naturally aspired 2.5-liter engine that produces 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque.
What is the difference in fuel mileage?
The 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine is fuel-efficient and delivers an estimated 24/32 mpg city/highway. The 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine achieves up to an estimated 35 mpg. The difference would be only three mpg for the additional 78 horsepower.
The 2.4-liter FA24 would be mated with Subaru's Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission), featuring an 8-speed manual mode function with steering wheel paddle shifters.
When will the 2023 Crosstrek be available for customers? Subaru of America is expected to launch the next-generation Crosstrek in early 2023 for U.S. customers. The announcement for the new model should be coming this summer.
We haven't even talked about the all-new 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness trim that should launch shortly after in the spring of 2023. The Wilderness trim level will be the next addition to the Outback and Forester Wilderness sub-brand, a big hit with Outdoor enthusiasts. The 2.4-liter turbocharged engine would be a great addition to the Forester and Crosstrek Wilderness all-wheel-drive models, and Subaru of America should make the ask.
Will the next-generation Subaru Crosstrek Sport and all-new Crosstrek Wilderness trim levels get the more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged engine upgrade? We can only hope it does. Stay tuned.
