Tesla started out simply as an electric car maker with the original Roadster back in 2008. Since then, not only has Tesla released more vehicles including the Model S, 3, X, Y & Cybertruck but the EV maker has also ventured into many industries.
Things like fast EV chargers with the 50,000-strong supercharger network make sense. If Tesla is selling EVs, then the company should also provide locations where owners of Tesla products can charge their vehicles conveniently.

Following the supercharger network, Tesla ventured into storage battery packs. Most of the value of an EV is in its battery pack and selling the battery packs for stationary energy storage also makes sense.

After merging with SolarCity, Tesla also became a solar panel producer and solar roof installer. Tesla’s mission is to transition the world to sustainable energy, and this decision to venture into clean energy production also had merit.
Then in 2014, Elon Musk decided Tesla vehicles would be the most advanced self-driving vehicles on the road. Since then, Tesla has amassed one of the best AI software and hardware teams in the world.
In 2021, Tesla also developed a new 4680 battery and now the EV maker produces one of the most advanced battery cells in the world.
By now, I think you get the trend, every aspect of Tesla's business that the EV maker has to rely on outside companies, Elon Musk directs his engineers to develop that capability in-house.
Tesla, a company that started out making sports cars by licensing the battery tech from AC Propulsion and chassis from Lotus, has developed so many in-house capabilities that Elon Musk says Tesla can be considered 20 companies in one.
Not only that, Elon Musk has recently also said that long-term Tesla should be considered an AI and robotics company rather than an EV maker.
In 2022, Tesla announced that the company is developing an in-house humanoid robot. Musk said initially the robot would be deployed to work in Tesla factories however, long term Elon believes the “Tesla robot will asher in the age of abundance” by eliminating one of the limiting factors of economic growth which is human labor.
This is as lofty a dream as anything we’ve ever heard for any company or product. However, the host of the popular podcast JRE Experience, Joe Rogan has his reservations about Tesla’s Optimus robot.
A couple of weeks back Tesla released a video showing the progress the company has made with its Optimus robot. The latest iteration called – Optimus Gen-2, has achieved a more human-like walking gate, more precise hand movement with fine sensing abilities, weight reduction, an articulated neck, and many more improvements.

During his latest episode, Joe Rogan hosted Dr. Debra Soh who is a neuroscientist and robotics researcher and she brought to Rogan’s attention the recent Tesla robot update video released by the EV maker.
Joe Rogan starts out by asking “Are they really making a robot? I forgot to ask him last time Elon Musk was in here.”
Dr. Soh gets Jemie to open the video from Tesla’s YouTube page showing the advancements of Optimus Gen-2 and continues to explain some of the capabilities of the Tesla robot including the fact that Optimus can now, using its neural network, color coordinate objects autonomously.
Joe Rogan continues to ask “Is this real?” is Tesla making a robot?” Watching Tesla’s Optimus video Rogan says, “God damn it Elon, what are you doing? This is going to be, this is I, Robot”
If you are unfamiliar “I, Robot” is a book by Isaac Asimov which was later adapted into a movie starring Will Smith in 2004. The movie/book tells a tale of a robot that suddenly achieves sentients and kills its creator.”
Joe Rogan proceeds to watch the Tesla Optimus Gen-2 update and throughout the video adds his own personal commentary.
In reaction to the Tesla robot’s walk, Rogan says “It’s walking like it’s going to sneak up on people.” In response to the Optimus robot doing Squats Rogan says “WoW, this is nuts!” In response to Optimus’s new hands, Rogan reacts by saying “I love the fact that it can extend its fingers, it’s moving its hands exactly like a person does, oh my God, it balanced the egg on the edge.”
Tesla’s video ends with the caption “Stay tuned to see what Optimus will do next.” Joe Rogan reads aloud this line and says “Yeah, I’ll tell you what Optimus will do next. It’s gone come out of an aircraft carrier, thousands of them, with machine guns.”
Rogan sees Optimus dancing at the end of the video and remarks “It’s going to dance after it kills everybody.”
Overall Joe Rogan seems to be both in awe and terrified of the capabilities of the Tesla bot. Currently, although making rapid progress, Optimus is still in its initial development phase, however, we’ll be sure to keep you posted as the Tesla robot takes over more human tasks.
