Tesla has been growing vehicle production at an incredible pace. And even more impressively, the EV maker is achieving this growth while the entire automotive industry has been forced to cut production due to the worldwide supply disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
And the biggest growth center for the EV maker has been Giga Shanghai. Tesla’s China factory, within two and a half years of the groundbreaking ceremony, has already surpassed an annual production run rate of over 500,000 vehicles.
This makes Giga Shanghai Tesla’s biggest production hub surpassing the decade-old Fremont California plant. For instance, in September 2021, Tesla hit a new wholesale record out of Giga Shanghai producing 56,000 vehicles in a single month.

September’s number was a 270% growth year over year and a 26% increase month over month.
However, the rapid growth seemed to be stabilizing. According to the wholesale number released by China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Giga Shanghai production decreased to 54,391 vehicles in October and 52,859 vehicles in November.
November’s numbers showed Giga Shanghai production has decreased for the second month in a row. However, the fall in production was only 2.8% month over month, and year over year November numbers were still up 144%.
After the breakneck speed Giga Shanghai has been growing, most saw the October and November production numbers as a sign of growth stabilizing.
However, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) just posted December 2021 wholesale numbers and Tesla is back to setting records. In December Tesla sold a record 70,847 cars made at Giga Shanghai.

From the total sales number 70,602, were sold domestically in China. And the remaining 245 vehicles were exported to other countries. This is 34% higher than November and three times that of the same time in 2020.

And if Tesla can maintain the 70,000 run rate, in 2022, Tesla’s China factory can produce 840,000 vehicles. What makes this number even more impressive is that Giga Shanghai still hasn’t achieved its final size
Long-term Tesla has said Giga Shanghai can produce over a million vehicles a year. The plant is currently undergoing phase II of construction, and the expansion is expected to be completed in March 2022.
