Tesla Cybertruck has an ‘Interior Cabin Radar’ Pointed at Passengers Used to Detect Occupancy

A new Tesla Cybertruck in-depth review video shows the Cybertruck comes standard with “interior cabin radar.” The radar is directed at passengers and Tesla is using it to detect seat occupancy in the all-electric truck.

It’s been more than a month since Tesla launched the Cybertruck however, the truck's hidden feature appears to still not yet be fully mapped out.

Since the delivery event, we’ve learned some crucial information about the truck including the fact that the Cybertruck is capable of 350KW V4 supercharging that can charge the Cybertruck from 15% to 85% in 18 minutes.

According to Elon Musk, we’ve also learned that the Cybertruck is capable of being turned into a boat using a factory modification that Tesla will offer sometime in the future.

Other things we’ve learned include the Cybertruck’s “Wade Mode” which uses air from the air suspension to pressurize the battery pack to make the whole vehicle water-proof.

We’ve also learned about the existence of the limited edition “Foundation Series” Cybertruck which comes with a special 3-headed laser-etched Cyberbeast insignia and other hidden details.

There are a lot of interesting gems throughout his video however, one particularly new Cybertruck feature that Kyle uncovered is the existence of an inside-facing radar for the Cybertruck’s cabin.

Since 2022, Tesla has famously removed radars from the company’s vehicles. Explaining this decision, Tesla says, the roads are designed for human beings to drive using their eyes, which means to solve level 5 autonomy, Tesla should also solve driving using vision.

Once Tesla AI is advanced enough to drive using only the cameras, at that point, Tesla believes there will be no need to supplement the Tesla Vision AI’s capabilities with radar.

In accordance with this thought process, the Cybertruck similar to all Tesla vehicles, does not have an exterior facing radar, however, thanks to Kyle from Out of Spec Review, we can see that the truck has an “Interior Cabin Radar.”

Kyle uncovered this functionality on the Cybertruck’s “Service Mode.” If you are unfamiliar, the Service Mode in Tesla vehicles is part of the vehicle software not accessible by owners but rather meant to be used by Tesla service technicians to diagnose issues with the vehicles.

Given that the Service Mode is meant to be used by Tesla-trained professionals, this part of Tesla’s vehicle software gives a more detailed overview of the vehicle at hand.

In Kyle’s review, he shows the interior-facing radar in seat controls and under occupant detection. The menu shows Tesla labels occupied seats with rectangular green borders, and unoccupied seats are marked with filled-in green blocks.

Given the fact that Tesla already uses weight sensors in the seats and has an interior-facing camera to monitor the interior of the vehicle, it’s not exactly clear why Tesla would need an additional radar for occupant detection.

Currently, this is all the information we’ve regarding the Cybertruck’s interior-facing radar however, we’ll be sure to keep you posted once we learn more about the feature.
