Elon Musk just gave us a clue to the cost of a humanoid robot. We'll go over that and much more about Tesla's most ambitious project yet!
Key Questions About the Tesla Humanoid Robot:
- How much will a Tesla humanoid robot cost?
- When will the Tesla humanoid robot be available?
- What will the Tesla humanoid robot do?
- How long will the Tesla humanoid robot last before needing to be recharged?
How much will a Tesla humanoid robot cost?
A Tesla humanoid robot will cost less than half the cost of a car, according to Elon Musk. He did not mention what kind of car, but most likely he means a Model 3/Y and not a Model S/X or Cybertruck. He didn't mention a Tesla car specifically, but I think he is referring to a Tesla.
I'm going to assume a Model 3 long range for purposes of this article, and if you take half of $47,000, you get $23,500.
A Tesla humanoid robot will most likely cost less than $23,500.
Elon also said that the cost will be less overtime. Much like Tesla vehicles getting cheaper over time, the Bot will get cheaper over time, but run a SaaS model, just like Tesla with its vehicles is moving to.

When will the Tesla humanoid robot be available?
Tesla certainly seems to be making fast progress on its humanoid robot. It was a couple of years ago that Tesla had a robot that was being held up by wires and today, the robot walks freely and can manipulate objects with its hands.
To answer this question, there are two things. First, the robot will most likely be available for Tesla to use by next year, 2025, for use in its factories. Once Tesla proves that out, I expect first customer deliveries to start sometime in late 2026/early 2027.
This is inline with what Elon Musk has said that sometime between 2025 and 2027, the Bot would be available for customers. Of course, Elon can be too optimistic, so it's possible we are looking at 2027 or 2028 for first customer deliveries.

What will the Tesla humanoid robot do?
Elon Musk has said that the Tesla humanoid robot will do boring and dangerous tasks first. This likely means mundane tasks at Tesla's factories, as well as dangerous jobs like working with the die casting machines.
However, there are many uses beyond that. For the everyday person, the Tesla bot will be a housekeeper, cleaning the house, doing dishes, washing clothes, cooking, etc...
I also see the Tesla Bot being a sort of companion or something you can talk to for those who don't live with anyone.
They will be programmed with video training data just like Tesla's cars with FSD and no doubt, someone is going to program a therapist or friend model into the Bot for that purpose, as well as household chores - just to name a few. There will be many things it can do.

How long will the Tesla humanoid robot last before needing to be recharged?
The Tesla humanoid robot is not going to need nearly as much power as a car. Even though Tesla first said the battery would be 2.3 kWh in 2022, I think it will be a little more than that. I expect it to be around 5 kWh.
This will ensure it can do what it needs to for an entire day and then be plugged in at night to recharge. Charging 5 kWh at night will be easy to do.
I expect the battery to be a Lithium-Iron-Phosphate because those can be charged to 100% regularly and have a longer lifespan. There may be an even better battery chemistry available by the time the bot is made ready.
That's about it for the Tesla bot at this time. I foresee Tesla doing more updates and videos about it as it makes progress. Look for first customer deliveries around 2027 and a price tag at around $23,500 for the first bots.

Complexity per unit mass is much higher with humanoid robots, but still I think it ends up costing less than half of a car
