Ford just bought a Cybertruck for $250,000 and is currently testing it in Detroit. Elon Musk responded that this is "worth it" for Ford to do. Why is Ford doing this and was this a good deal for Ford?
Ford Pays Premium For Cybertruck and Tests It
Ford paid a premium, to the tune of $250,000, for a Tesla Cybertruck, and has been seen doing some testing of it in Detroit. Elon Musk calls this transaction, "worth it" for Ford.
There are several reasons Ford is doing this, and I think that Ford did not want to wait in line for its Cybertruck order - or for anyone at Ford who had a Cybertruck on order. Too much time would pass.
Of note, Ford now has full access to Tesla's Supercharger network. The two companies aren't just competitors, but are cooperating as well.
Competitive Analysis: Automotive companies often purchase competitors' vehicles to dissect and study them, understanding their technology, build quality, and unique selling points. This helps them in benchmarking their own products against the competition.
Ford is likely wanting to study and analyze the Cybertruck completely to take it apart and see what it can do to be competitive with the Cybertruck - or even surpass it.
Technological Insight: The Cybertruck represents a significant departure from traditional truck designs, both in terms of aesthetics and technology.
Ford could be interested in the electric powertrain, battery technology, and innovative features of the Cybertruck to potentially incorporate similar advancements into their own electric vehicles (EVs).

Market Research: Testing the Cybertruck in Detroit, a city synonymous with the automotive industry, allows Ford to gauge public and industry reaction to the vehicle. This can provide valuable insights into what potential customers might expect from future electric trucks.
Performance Benchmarking: By testing the Cybertruck, Ford can directly compare its performance, durability, and utility against their own electric trucks, like the Ford F-150 Lightning. This can help identify areas for improvement or differentiation.
Strategic Positioning: Paying a premium to acquire a competitor's vehicle early can be seen as a bold strategic move. It signals Ford's serious commitment to the EV space and its willingness to invest in understanding and potentially outperforming competitors.
In essence, Ford's acquisition of the Cybertruck for testing purposes is likely driven by a desire to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving EV market, particularly in the electric truck segment, which is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
Eventually, all vehicles are going to go EV and if Ford does not stay relevant in that space, they are going to be in trouble. I think it's a no-brainer move for Ford to do this.
