A Facebook user, who goes by the name of Kevin William, asked a question about how to tell if a Cybertruck is a beast or dual-motor version by looking at the VIN. VIN means vehicle identification number, and every vehicle made has one. There is an answer to this.
The Cybertruck is currently only in Foundation Series, which means a more expensive version with some luxuries and engravings, with free FSD for life as well as premium connectivity. It comes in two versions, the Cyberbeast or "beast" for short, and a dual-motor version with a bit more range and less performance.
In order to tell what type of Cybertruck you have by the VIN number, it's important to look at the 8th digit in the VIN. Here's what all the digits mean:
Example VIN: 7 G 2 C E G E E 3 R A 0 2 0 4 5 6
Digit 1-3 are the world manufacturing identifier. 5YJ means manufactured by Tesla and a vehicle type of passenger car (Model S & Model 3). A 7G2 means a vehicle type of truck, so a Cybertruck would start with that.
Digit 4 is the make/line/series. T means semi and C means Cybertruck.
Digit 5 is the chassis/cab type. B = Day cab. E means truck.
Digit 6 is the gross vehicle weight rating. G means class G, greater than 8,001–9,000 lbs. E means very heavy at greater than 13,001 lbs. H are vehicles between 9,001 and 10,000 lbs.
Digit 7 is the battery type. E means electric.
Digit 8 is the motor/drive unit/braking system. This is the important digit here. E means triple motor, cyberbeast version of the Cybertruck. D = dual-motor standard, and B means dual-motor rear axle and air brakes for the semi.
Digit 9 is the check digit, assigned by manufacturer. It can be anything, in this case, a 3.
Digit 10 is the model year. R = 2024.
Digit 11 is the location of manufacture. A = Austin, Texas, USA. N = Reno, NV, USA.
Digit 12 is a serial #, 100,000s digit. In this case, 0.
Digit 13-17 is a unique serial number. In this case, 20456.
There you have it, that's everything you needed to know about a Cybertruck VIN.
Is this an easy way to tell what type of Cybertruck a version is by the VIN number?
