The Model 3 RWD, with LFP Batteries is the most efficient EV of 2022, according to the Department of Energy website.
Model 3 RWD, With LFP Batteries, Is Most Efficient Car
The Tesla Model 3, a single motor, rear-wheel drive vehicle with LFP batteries (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate), is the most efficient vehicle on the Department of Energy's highest MPGe list for 2022 electric vehicles. Tesla's Model Y, Model S, and Model X were also on the list as well.
This is an important metric. MPGe is the unit of measure by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to represent electric vehicle (EV) fuel economy in a common unit with gas-powered vehicles, where 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity are equal to the energy contained in one gallon of gasoline. It is miles per gallon equivalent and helps compare two different vehicle types to each other.
If you were looking to buy an electric vehicle and did not know which one to buy today, the easy choice would be a Model 3 RWD with LFP batteries. The EPA range is stated at 272 with the aero-covered tires, and often times, I am getting over 300 miles of range due to driving conservatively. It is a Tesla and sometimes that's hard to do!
Tesla has made many changes to the Model 3 since 2018 and one of those changes was adding LFP batteries. This gives the batteries a life of 500,000 miles or more and allows for charging to 100% much more often - and that is more intuitive for a first time EV buyer.
Other Contenders
There are other contenders for the top stop and top rate MPGe for EV's. The top 10 are:
Make and ModelHighest MPGe
Tesla Model 3132
Lucid Air131
Tesla Model Y129
Chevrolet Bolt EV120
Hyundai Kona120
Tesla Model S120
Kia EV6117
Chevrolet Bolt EUV115
Hyundai Ioniq 5114
Kia Niro Electric112
Further down the list, after the top 10, you get vehicles like the Polestar 2, the Volkswagen ID.4, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Tesla Model X.
Tesla isn't the only EV maker around anymore and this is good for the planet as a whole. Other companies, like Lucid, GM, Volkswagen, Polestar, and Nissan are making EVs. They have a long ways to go to catch up to Tesla, but at least they are getting started.
Tesla will most likely have a new winner at the top spot of this list in the next couple years and that will be the new Tesla Roadster. It will be a lighter car then the Tesla Model 3 RWD and will be able to go faster. Expect to see it topping this list in 2024 to 2025.
What do you think of the Tesla Model 3 RWD? Is it the most efficient EV around?
