A Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says Carvana Offered Him $59,400 for his 3 Month Old Cybertruck With Only 2,000 Miles – “A Few Weeks Ago They Were Offering $80,000”

A Tesla Cybertruck owner reports that Carvana quoted him $59,400 for his three-month-old Cybertruck, which has merely 2,000 miles. Other Cybertruck owners note, “Weeks prior, they offered $80,000 for a non-Foundation Cybertruck with 9,000 miles.”

Francis Pham, a Cybertruck owner from Virginia, recently attempted to sell his 3-month-old Cybertruck with only 2,000 miles on it.

However, Francis was surprised to discover that his truck had depreciated by over $20,000 in just three months.

Specifically, Francis tried to sell his Cybertruck to the used car retailer Carvana.

After three months and 2,000 miles, Carvana offered Francis $59,400 for his Cybertruck, which originally cost $80,000.

However, although he is surprised to see how much his Cybertruck has depreciated over the last three months, Francis says that thanks to Tesla’s incentives, he’ll still come out ahead even if he sold his Cybertruck at this price.

Still surprised by the trade-in offer he received from Carvana, Francis shared a post in the Tesla Cybertruck group on Facebook.

Francis sarcastically writes…

“You’ve got to love Carvana's lowball offer—no haggling involved. If you accept the offer, they turn around and resell it for $75k on their website.

I was just testing the site. The truck has 2,000 miles and is only 3 months old. Still, I’d come out ahead."

Below his post, Francis shared a screenshot of his Carvana offer, which reads…

“Your 2024 Tesla Cybertruck offer is here!

CARVANA

YOUR OFFER IS READY

Expires Wednesday, April 2

2024 Tesla Cybertruck

$59,400”

Over $20,000 in depreciation in just three months is not ideal; however, to make matters worse, other Cybertruck owners say that if only Francis had sold his Cybertruck to Carvana a few weeks ago, he could have fetched more than $80,000.

In response to Francis’s post, a fellow Cybertruck owner, Ryan Matthew, writes…

“A week ago, Carvana was offering $80,000 for my non-Foundation Series Cybertruck with 9,000 miles.”

Considering that the Cybertruck is priced at $79,900, brand new from Tesla, Ryan claims he could have sold his 9,000-mile Cybertruck to Carvana and purchased a brand new one for less.

He writes…

“You could buy a new one cheaper. I think people took advantage of it, and they took in too many in the last few weeks, so now they aren’t offering anything.”

Unfortunately, even though Ryan received a higher offer for his Cybertruck than it is worth as a brand new vehicle, he took too long to decide and says now he has to face the depreciation.

Ryan writes…

“I was going to sell it to them and buy another… I waited too long, apparently.”

It seems that the issue here is that Carvana took too long to adjust its Cybertruck prices after the initial excitement for the vehicle, during which resale prices soared above $200,000.

However, being a large corporation, it appears that Carvana did not quickly adjust prices to match the shifting sentiment about the vehicle.

Looking at the comments, despite how much the vehicle has devalued, some Cybertruck owners say they’re still happy they bought the vehicle.

A fellow Cybertruck owner, Richard Mul, writes…

“I don’t care how much I paid for my Foundation Series Cybertruck. I knew very well what would happen months later as the hype came down.

To me, it’s worth every single penny I put in, and I would do it again. I did not buy the truck for the people to see me or the value… I BOUGHT THE TRUCK FOR ME!”

Overall, listening to Cybertruck owners, most still say they love the truck despite how much it devalued. However, please let me know what you think in the comments. Why buy a vehicle that is ugly, poorly designed, prone to breakdowns, and sometimes outright dangerous? Also it is subject to vandalism due to it's nazi company owner. If that's your style, ok. If I had the money I would buy anything else. To each their own.

Take whatever you can get now. I saw the infomercial on just how poorly those trucks are put together. The dude demonstrated how trim and panels were glued on. Another showed how parts of the body falls off on the freeway! That can’t be good. Finally Elon ain’t too popular these days and justifiably so. Can’t mess with Americans jobs and expect a love fest reaction. Just saying I think k you should unload it now before they go to 0 on resale. Finally that has to be the ugliest vehicle I have ever seen. Good luck

LOL, you can see the five stages of grief in Tesla owners

denial - "Looking at the comments, despite how much the vehicle has devalued, some Cybertruck owners say they’re still happy they bought the vehicle."

anger - “I don’t care how much I paid for my Foundation Series Cybertruck"

bargaining - "Francis says that thanks to Tesla’s incentives, he’ll still come out ahead even if he sold his Cybertruck at this price."

depression - "so now they aren’t offering anything."

acceptance - Bumper sticker saying,

"Bought this before Elon went crazy"

Play stupid games, get stupid prizes.

The tesla cyber truck is like the crackerjack toy that breaks the first time you play with it. Maybe next time you should invest in something (truly) American. *shrugs*

I personally think that the Cybertruck is a dumb vehicle to buy. But the sentiment that some owners expressed is exactly the right one to have, regardless of which vehicle you're considering: buy a vehicle that you think is worth the money because you're happy driving it and using it for whatever it is you do. Don't be shallow and buy a vehicle because of how you think others will perceive you, and don't buy a vehicle because you think it's a good investment. Unless you're actually using a vehicle directly to earn money, vehicles pretty much always money losing propositions.

Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Not what you think or what you might owe. Money offered is all that matters. Everything else is an imaginary figure. That's Carvana's cash in hand offer. Finding someone else who will pay more is up to you. But the trucks are not in demand right now. Nobody except fans wants one. The resale value is awful. The Carvana price is just going to keep dropping.

So, first off, Carvana is a reseller. They are going to offer you an extremely lower valued price than trade in or private sale. They want to make the most profit from their investment which is the purchase of your vehicle. You are going to be offered the lowest price. If you want true market value of your vehicle it is recommended to sell private. Dealerships and places like Carvana are retail, so to them you are wholesale. You get the cheapest offer so they can maximize theirs. Don't sell to a dealer if you want to get the most from your investment, Your property/vehicle. They prey upon people who need quick cash or doesn't do their own research on how much their car is actually worth. Compare your Carvana offer with KB (Kelly Blue book). You will be disgusted. I wish you the best of luck if you work with these people.

How's that "so much less expensive to own and operate than an ICE". Can't wait to hear about your insurance renewal.

The Cuber truck is hideous looking and extremely awkward much like the socially awkward Miss Musk. The Edsel of this generation!

I wouldn’t take a Tesla if one was GIVEN to me,….EXCEPT to sell it to Carvana immediately, just to make a bit of quick money. I’ve read a few horror stories about how some of the cars’ features react in accidents, and I think Teslas are POORLY DESIGNED DEATHTRAPS.

That's actually not all that bad. In 2022, I bought a new Mazda for a few thousand under MSRP and went to trade it a year later and my carvana and other dealership offers were 40% below what I paid. I ended up waiting a year and the offers actually went up but the point of this comment is the cybertruck offer is better than the bath I would have taken on a Mazda, a much better vehicle. Maybe just wait it out. If they are even offering that much, clearly there are buyers.

Those who claim they buy Cybertrucks because they are dependable and capable will claim they buy Harleys for the same reasons. However they do buy them for the same reason. To be seen.
