Elon Musk Shares the New Tesla Roadster Can Fly
Elon Musk shared a public statement that the new Tesla Roadster can fly. This is a very bold statement to make. The reason this is a bold statement is that he did not say the new Tesla Roadster can hover. He specifically said it can fly.
Fly suggests that the car can do more than just lift a few inches off the ground. It suggests it may be able to go much higher than anyone is anticipating.
Now, if the new Tesla Roadster is unveiled, and we find out it can go a few inches off the ground for a second, then Elon Musk saying it can fly will be seen as overblown and hype. If the car ends up being able to go much higher than that for longer, we'll see that his statement here is valid.

Elon responded to a Tweet that essentially said that we've asked for flying cars and gotten basically everything else besides them.
The timeline for this should be an unveil by the end of the year, as Elon Musk has said as much in the past.

Fly - Or Just Hover?
The biggest question regarding this statement is will the new Tesla Roadster be able to fly - actually fly, or just hover above the ground.
As an example, a flying car to me is something like this, the AirCar (there's been other variations of this, but this is one):
Will the new Tesla Roadster be able to take off to the skies - that is the big question regarding what Elon Musk has said.
I do believe, for sure, that it will be able to hover off the ground with the SpaceX rocket package, and will do an incredibly quick 0 to 60 mph time. That's not in doubt at all.
But, being able to lift off the ground and fly in the air, that is an entirely different feat and brings into question things like regulations, safety, and noise.

Elon Musk has said that flying cars will induce too much air flow and will be too noisy. It will cause neighbors to be angry. He says that if you want a flying car, put wheels on a helicopter. However, this was also over a year ago, so things may have changed since then. You can listen to him talk about it on the Joe Rogan show here.
I think that we'll see something of a middle ground here. Having a new Tesla Roadster being able to fly in the sky could cause problems in the air with noise and safety.
Joe asked him about future technologies involving a magnet road and that would work, but Elon does not recommend it.
Elon has put some thought and consideration into flying cars and created The Boring Company in order to handle traffic and not flying cars.
Elon Musk also said that he has an idea for a VTOL (vertical take off and landing), supersonic, electronic jet. Perhaps this is the start of that.
So, why did he say the new Tesla Roadster can fly?
