Tesla Patent For Facial Recognition To Improve Passenger Safety.
It would be a scary situation to be unconscious in a vehicle on the freeway (or anywhere for that matter) and having some kind of health condition like a heart attack or other health problem, and nobody knowing that it was happening.
Well, Tesla may have created the patent that will help solve and alleviate this worry people may have when riding in a robotaxi or even just a regular Tesla they are driving.
Tesla just published a patent today that has various diagrams outlining a facial and body recognition software that will enable the following:
Select a driver profile.
Call 911 if you are unresponsive.
Drive autonomously to the nearest hospital if you are unresponsive and the vehicle is driveable.
Automatically adjust HVAC blowers.
Greet you by name when entering the vehicle.
Automatically adjust seat positioning.
Change audio focus based on the positioning and size of the other occupants.
Determine the health and safety of you, the driver.
Tesla is working very hard on vehicle safety and is refusing to be complacent, which is a good thing.
Tesla was awarded a 🌶️spicy🌶️patent recently for driver facial recognition.
Your Tesla will soon recognize your face to:
-Select a driver profile
-Call 911 if you're unresponsive
-Drive autonomously to the nearest hospital if you're unresonsive and vehicle is driveable… pic.twitter.com/32nrdp6tps

Reasons For Patent and How It Works
There are a variety of diagrams in the patent, and Tesla will need to create systems that interface with a number of 3rd parties, including the police and medical centers.
There are also a huge number of pieces of technology that will need to work together in order to enable Tesla to automatically detect what is going on with passengers and make different choices in case of problems.
There is the battery and vehicle power system.
There is the wireless communication system.
There is the circuitry and memory within the vehicle.
There is the audio interface, OVRM, display, and UI.

Then there is the vehicle hardware components that all have to be working properly together with the software. The vehicle hardware components involved are.
The powertrain control system, steering system, and braking system.
The sensing system, which includes the image-capture device, plurality of vehicle sensors, seat occupancy sensor, microphone, and plurality of external image-capture devices.
Lastly, there is the plurality of in-vehicle system, such as the HVAC, servo motor, vehicle audio system, and plurality of speakers.
Tesla is making this patent and working on these safety features because they care about the people in their cars and one day, people will be riding in Tesla's as a robotaxi and the car needs to be able to handle all cases of health or other problems that could happen to a person - and to be able to respond appropriately.
If I were working at Tesla, this would be one system that I think would be very cool to work on!
I'll be sure to update as I find more about this patent, in the meantime, stay tuned for more Tesla news!
