Tesla FSD - 30 Day Free Trial - Coming Soon
BREAKING: The one-month free trial is now here - just 8 days after writing this article!
Elon Musk should hold true to his statement that Tesla will do a roll-out of a free month trial for all cars in North America for Tesla FSD once it is super smooth and not just safe. Based on the videos and progress of Tesla FSD and version 12.3, this seems like it is going to be soon.
Tesla doing a 30-day free trial of FSD is an important milestone for the company because it means Tesla is confident enough in its FSD software to release it to everyone in North America to use for themselves.

The 30-day free trial will happen as the following occur:
- Tesla releases a version beyond 12.3: 12.3 is good, but is not quite ready for wide release, as there are still some scenarios it gets tripped up on.
- 12.4 needs to release: This version has been said to be a big improvement on 12.3 and Elon Musk says it's another big jump in capabilities.
- There needs to be regular 0 intervention drives: 0 intervention drives need to be common - and not just in California, but all over the U.S.
- A version after 12.4 needs to be released: It could arguably be version 13 - and it should also combine the freeway stack to this version, as the freeway stack still runs on version 11.
- Tesla then needs to do a software update: This will enable FSD for all Tesla vehicles in North America.

Releasing Future Version of FSD Beyond 12.3
Tesla needs to release a version beyond 12.3 of its FSD software. 12.3 is very good and has shown very human-like behavior. This video from AI Driver shows numerous things that the car did that were human-like, but also some glaring errors, like trying to get in a right lane that had a dumpster making the gap too narrow.
It's impressive to see what the car can do, and numerous issues from version 11 have been resolved. But it's not quite ready for wide release yet or being offered as a free trial.
12.4 Needs to Release
Tesla FSD version 12.4 needs to release, and the reason for this is so that the difference between 12.3 and 12.4 can be seen. If the difference is a big difference with the issues in 12.3 resolved, then it's quite possible that Tesla may be ready for a wide release and to offer FSD as a 30-day free trial.

One thing that will need to be fixed is Chuck's unprotected left-hand turn. He did a video yesterday, showing the car doing multiple unprotected left-hand turns, and some of them were done really well. However, others were not so good and even though they were completed, the car stayed way too long in the lanes of oncoming traffic. This needs to be fixed. You can check it out in the video here.
There Needs To Be Regular 0 Intervention Drives Everywhere
There needs to be regular 0 intervention drives everywhere for everyone. And it can't just be in California - it needs to be across the United States and Canada in order for a free trial to be offered and wide release to North America.
The reason for this is that the sample size of drivers will greatly increase, and add more variability and chance for an accident with so many thousands of more drivers. The 30-day free trial may increase the usage by orders of magnitude, with hundreds of thousands of Tesla vehicles on the road using FSD. It needs to work incredibly well before this happens.
A Version Beyond 12.4 Needs To Release
I think that Tesla will still need to release a version beyond 12.4 in order to do a wide release and 30-day free trial. Once this happens, and it is obvious that the drives are all happening with 0 interventions, then I think Tesla will do its wide release and free trial. I predict it will be version 13 or 12.69 - or some version like that.
I don't think it will take too long - definitely before the end of the year is when I see this happening. Now that the end-to-end neural net system is up and running, and Elon Musk has said that compute is no longer a limiting factor or holding things up, I think we'll see fast progress.
A Software Update To Enable It
Finally, Tesla will need to do a software update to enable the free trial and wide release of Tesla's FSD. Once this happens, it's going to be a monumental moment because hundreds of thousands of people will start using it and of those that use it, I think many will opt for the $199 per month subscription - especially if it looks like running your car as a driverless robotaxi is just around the corner.

Once FSD is super smooth (not just safe), we will roll out a free month trial for all cars in North America.
Then extend to rest of world after we ensure it works well on local roads and regulators approve it in that country.
