It wasn't too long ago that GMC reported having trouble ramping up Hummer EV production. The situation was getting so bad that the truck was being made in fewer numbers than the Rivian R1T. However, it would seem that GMC has found a way to work past the problems and manage to increase the number of reservations to 90,000.
Significant Milestone For GMC
The higher figure was confirmed by GMC marketing director Rich Latek who dropped the figure during an interview with the folks at Autoblog while on the floor at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show. When we last checked on the reservation numbers, they were sitting at 80,000 pre-orders, so this jump in sales represents a slight bump of 10,000 or so.
Latek even confirmed that this figure has the potential to go higher, with the brand confirming that the reservation numbers have been going up month to month with the pickup and the SUV being included in the final number. That said, the truck is still making up ground when compared to the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T, which did have a head start in production over the Hummer and the duo have also had more time to build a following with EV truck buyers.
What's Next For Hummer?
With the Edition 1 Hummer pickup and SUV spearheading Hummer sales, the brand is now focused on expanding the lineup, with some of the lower trims being released into the ordering pool in the near future. The next one in the pipeline will be the EV3X which can be thought of as a detuned version of the Edition 1. It retains that model's three-motor setup, but instead of the 1,000 hp setup, it makes 800 hp and gets over 300 miles of range between charges. The EV3X will be making its way to dealerships in the fall of 2022.
These models will start at $99,995 and will be followed in spring by the dual-motor powered $89,995 EV2X model. GMC is attempting to make the Hummer a stronger mass market play, and is hoping that the EV3 and EV2X will help add depth and higher sales to the lineup with the SUV model mirroring this strategy.
