Kia is on a roll with its current EV lineup, and the new EV4 is proving the brand is excellent and bending futuristic styling and utility. The brand seems to have gone through a lot of trouble in making the sedan and hatchback look the same, at least from the front. It was a smart move to keep the brand identity strong, but the hatchback presents better. The sedan's rear especially appears slightly unbalanced compared to the hatchback’s sleek shape. The shorter rear deck on the hatch also makes the car appear more put together.
About a year and a half ago, Kia showcased two new EV concepts, the EV3 and EV4, at its EV Day event in South Korea. These new EVs may represent Kia’s ambitions better than the midsize SUV EV9 because they will likely be produced in larger numbers. A few days ago Kia just unveiled them.
While the EV4 sedan offers an elongated tail and fastback silhouette, the hatchback presents a more versatile design with sculpted fenders and symmetrical body accents.
"I love the hatchback, and think Kia did a great job on a futuristic design language. The sedan on the other hand is completely ruined with that extended rear, I mean wasn't there any other way to make the car longer? Maybe skip the sedan and make it a more useful wagon. I wonder if anyone is going to buy the sedan version," writes Duartec3000 user on Reddit, commenting under the discussion of Kia unveiling the EV4 sedan and the hatchback.
The hatchback does have aesthetic similarities like the wide stance at the back, but the hatchback features a sharply angled rear window and connected LED taillight design. It also has a shorter overhand and a more dynamic look, making it seem sportier compared to the stretched-out proportions of the sedan. These attributes make it a stronger adversary against the Tesla Model Y, appealing to buyers seeking flair and function.
EV4 Trumps Model Y in Design
Technicalities aside, EV hatchbacks and crossovers are in season currently. They just look better and feel more forward-thinking. While the Model Y has a strong foothold in the EV hatchback segment, Kia’s answer provides a fresh option with increased practicality, unique designs, and tools that could make it more attractive to consumers.
The EV4 hatchback stands out with aggressive angular headlights, a sleek front grille, and sculpted sides. While the Model Y features soft curves, the unadorned shape blends into the crossover segment without visual drama. The same applies to the front and rear ends. Kia’s wraparound LED light bar at the rear of the sloped rear window blends into a seamless futuristic show that has drawn significant excitement on social media.
Better Driving Dynamics
The Model Y may excel in straight-line power with a 342 horsepower motor compared to the 282 horsepower option on the EV4, but the latter has a sportier feel. Its lower center of gravity and compact rear design combine to provide a more responsive driving experience that feels engaging. Kia’s handling is also more dynamic than Tesla's laid-back approach. This is probably due to the advanced suspension and steering systems that offer a more responsive drive.
Practicality with Liftback Design
The Kia EV4 also comes with better storage and a liftback trunk. This is not to say the Model Y offers cramped quarters, but the EV4’s design provides a larger opening, so there is better access to accommodate bulky items. Though the Tesla offers great cargo space, it does not have the same flexibility as the Kia. The rear seating may also be folded down flat to create a large cargo area to accommodate those who need the flexibility of bigger trunk space.
Premium Interior and Advanced Technology
The Kia EV4 and the Tesla both have modern tech-driven cabins in line with the desires of their customer base, but the EV4 offers significant luxury without a substantial price tag. Kia included attention to detail with soft-touch surfaces, high-quality materials, and a refined layout to give the vehicle an upscale feel.
The EV4 also features a wide digital dash complete with a touchscreen for infotainment and driver assist system integration. Tesla may also be sleek and futuristic, but it also feels overly minimal to some. The lack of traditional dials on the Model Y’s center console may also be disorienting. Hence, the EV4 hatchback balances tangible controls and tech-forward features by making operating easier. The EV4 cabin layout also appears more spacious due to the external dimensions.
Better Value for Money
Though Tesla has been in the market for longer, its high price point is inconvenient for many consumers who want to enter the electric vehicle market. The EV4 offers better driving dynamics, material quality, and aesthetics.
Though it has not yet been released, it is estimated Kia will place the MSRP between $30,000 and $40,000. By providing a more attractive price tag, the EV4 offers buyers a premium experience without the high price tag. This is particularly important for individuals who want to switch to a budget-friendly open but still experience the value they desire.
Though the Tesla Model Y is still a strong contender within the EV crossover space, the EV4 hatchback makes a compelling argument to switch sides. Its better design, improved interior, practicality, and practicality are just a few of the features that make it an excellent option if you want a modern but affordable electric vehicle. If your goal is an EV that offers a unique and stylish alternative compared to the minimalist Tesla, the Kia EV4 is the best option.
What do you think about Kia’s design choices with the EV4? Do you prefer the sleek and practical hatchback, or do you see potential in the sedan despite its controversial rear? Share your thoughts and personal experiences in the comments below. We’d love to hear your take!
