But they look like the old ones!
We know. You're not the only one to notice that. The new A5's design looks to be more of facelift than an actual new model. But for Audi, the A5 was big success and they didn't want to mess it up. The key item to tell the difference between old and new is the front end. Audi has fitted their new 'Singleframe' grille that is wider than the one used on the last-generation model. There is also sculpting on the hood to give some aggression.
Audi has made some tweaks to the overall aerodynamics to A5's body to give it a class-leading 0.25 drag coefficient.
Are there any big changes?
Yes! It begins with the interior as Audi has introduced a new dash design that is very modern with barely any buttons or switches. A large 8.3-inch comes standard with Audi's MMI infotainment system. The A5 will also be one of the first Audi models to feature their connect SIM card. This card is permanently installed into the vehicle to provide an LTE data connection. Optional is Audi's virtual cockpit system that trades the standard instrument cluster for a 12.3 screen.
Also, the 2017 A5 is 132.5 pounds lighter than the outgoing model.
Anything on powertrains?
Audi only provided details for the European market A5. There will two gas and three diesel engines on offer with outputs ranging from 190 to 286 horsepower. A choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic, and front or quattro all-wheel drive will be offered. Certain A5 configurations can be had with Audi's new quattro with ultra technology that can disconnect the rear wheels to increase fuel economy.
The S5 features a new version of Audi's 3.0L supercharged V6 with 354 horsepower - up 21 horsepower from the current S5. An eight-speed automatic and quattro all-wheel drive comes standard.
Nothing on convertible or Sportback?
Nope. We expect Audi to show those at a later date.
When are they going on sale?
Later this year in Europe.
Do you want to take a possible guess as to the North American spec A5?
Why not. We expect the A5 to come with the 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder found in the A4 with 252 horsepower and come paired with Audi's S-tronic transmission. There will be choice of either front-wheel or quattro all-wheel drive. The S5 will also come with the 3.0L supercharged V6, along with the eight-speed automatic and quattro.
As for when we could see it, early next year seems like a safe bet.
