Reuters is reporting that Volkswagen's 'Das Auto', the advertising slogan used around the world will be put on the chopping block. Originally introduced in 2007 by former boss Martin Winterkorn, the slogan was simple, meaning 'The Car'. But in light of the diesel scandal, Volkswagen has decided to go in a different direction in an effort to improve its public image and show that it has some humility.
At a meeting in Desden, Volkswagen talked with 2,000 group managers about the future of the brand and how they plan to improve their image. The attendees were also shown the new tagline for the brand which is simply 'Volkswagen'. The 'Das Auto' slogan was seen as being too 'pretentious' by a number of Volkswagen executives.
"Wherever our logo appears in future, it will be backed by the new brand slogan 'Volkswagen'. The slogan will be rolled out in stages across the world," a spokesman told Reuters.
The spokesman also said that 'Das Auto' isn't fully dead yet, but it would not take part in the upcoming campaign.
Do you think Volkswagen's change in slogan is a good idea?
