Volvo is the latest automaker to get into this game with the introduction of the S90 Long Wheelbase. Compared to the standard S90, the Long Wheelbase rides on a wheelbase that is 4.7-inches longer (120.5 for the L vs. 115.8 inches). There are two models on offer. First is the S90 Long Wheelbase which is your standard S90 model with a choice of T4, T5, and T8 plug-in hybrid powertrains on offer.
Second is the S90 Excellence which looks to be the most luxurious model Volvo has ever offered. The big feature about the Excellence is the Lounge Console, first shown as a concept last year. The console takes the place of front passenger seat and gives the person sitting the back a place to rest their feet along with a space for storage. The console also comes with a built-in entertainment system.
There are other luxuries on offer for the S90 Excellence. They include,
- Power-adjustable rear seats
- Panaromic sunroof
- Heated and cooled cup holders
- Refrigeration compartment
- Fold-out work tables
- Handmade crystal glasses
The S90 Excellence will only available with the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Along with this announcement, Volvo revealed that production of the S90 would move from Torslanda, Sweden to Daqing, China where it will be exported around the world.
“China will play an increasingly important part in our global manufacturing ambitions. Our factories here will deliver world-class products for export across the globe in coming years, contributing to our objective of selling up to 800,000 cars a year by 2020,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group in a statement.
The S90 Long Wheelbase and Excellence will debut at 2016 Guangzhou Motor Show later this month. Production of the S90 Long Wheelbase is expected to begin sometime later this month, with the Excellence following next year.
