GMC Recalling Nearly 71,000 2022 GMC Sierra Pickups Because Part of the Chrome Grille Can Fall Off

This is an odd recall because it involves a small portion of the pickups produced by GM. The recall is tied to a specific grille.

There are millions of GM pickup trucks on the road. If you add the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 together, they actually outsell the Ford F-Series any given year. That is why this recall is so strange. The recall only affects the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickups with chrome grilles. According to the paperwork filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “One or more of the attachments that hold the front upper grille deflector in place may fracture over time. If all eight attachment points break, the deflector may detach from the vehicle while driving.” Having parts of the grille fall off can obviously lead to an accident if the parts hit other vehicles or hit the driver’s windshield and cause them to lose focus.

What is Causing the Problem

According to the Recall Safey Report filed with NHTSA, GMC started investigating after a driver complained that the chrome grille defector came off while he was driving the truck. Soon other reports of grille problems started surfacing. “Chrome deflectors supplied during the suspect manufacturing window may have attachment points that may not adequately withstand expected loads. GM identified 1,225 field complaints potentially related to this condition, including 4 allegations of an associated accident.” Luckily, no injuries have been reported because of the deflectors coming off.

Some of the drivers reported that they did hear a rattle after the deflector started to come loose and that was the only warning sign that the truck had a problem.

The recall involves 70,768 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks with chrome grille deflectors produced after GM’s 2022 model year mid-cycle enhancement. The trucks were produced Nov 09, 2021 - Sep 29, 2022.

How GMC Will Fix the Problem

GMC engineers are still trying to determine how to fix the chrome grille deflectors. Owners will be notified about the issue starting March 24th, 2025. The owners will be notified again, once GMC has figured out how to fix it.

The NHTSA number for the recall is 25V-060. The GM number for the recall is N242490120. GMC will reimburse any owners that have already had the grille deflectors fixed.
