Team Shelby is heading to the Detroit area to celebrate two big anniversaries. Hard to believe that the “King of the Road”, the Ford Shelby GT500KR is celebrating its 50th anniversary and Team Shelby is marking its 10th year. To celebrate both events, Team Shelby is scheduling a number of festivities to take place around the annual Woodward Dream Cruise.
Since 1995, cruisers from all over the world make a pilgrimage to Woodward Avenue, on the third Saturday in August, to celebrate automotive history. What started as a fundraiser for a Ferndale soccer team has grown in the world’s largest one-day automotive event. More than a million people and 40,000 incredible vehicles head to Woodward to revel in the beauty, design and history of cars and the people who built them and love them.
Team Shelby is planning different events for different levels of participation August 14-19th. It is calling the gathering the “Dearborn Invasion”.
Team Shelby Events
For the person who loves speed, Shelby has reserved track time at a track on the western side of the state. On August 14th and 15th, drivers can spend time on the track at the Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, MI. The Mohawk Track Experience program will allow you to drive your own car, or drive one of their vehicles on the track. If you don’t want to drive, they will also provide rides in a Shelby Super Snake or a 1965 Shelby GT350. The different levels of participation are all priced differently, to make sure you can get exactly the experience you desire.
In the days before the Woodward Cruise, Shelby is planning a large display of GT500KRs, a morning at Greenfield Village, and a private event at the Henry Ford Museum, with a special dinner. Speakers include Carroll Shelby’s grandson, Aaron Shelby and executives from Shelby American.
Attendees will also be treated to a private event at Ford’s Romeo Proving grounds, drivers will be allowed to follow a professional on the 5-mile oval track and tour the facility. Professional drivers will also be on hand to take people in the Autocross Experience.
Woodward is the Star of the Show
Saturday is obviously the big show on Woodward Avenue as cruisers gather from all over the world. I’m not kidding, there are some fans who ship their cars over from Europe and Australia, just to be part of the event. More than a million people line Woodward, usually from 9 Mile all the way north to 15 Mile, just to see the vehicles that cruise. The sponsoring communities of Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Berkley, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, and Pontiac usually sponsor different types of events, including concert and shows.
Ford sponsors what it calls Mustang Alley, in Ferndale, and Team Shelby is making sure that spots will be available with the Ford group for Shelbys.
The Shelby Cobra Club usually has a significant presence at the Dream Cruise as well.
Team Shelby is also inviting Shelby owners to participate in the Ford Mustang Memories car show at the Ford world headquarters, in Dearborn, MI, on Sunday, August 19th. That is typically an incredible show featuring many pristine vehicles that only venture out for this show. Edsel and Bill Ford have been known to show up to see the great examples of Ford muscle cars.
Team Shelby is planning this grand adventure, just as Ford is promising a new 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The new Ford Shelby GT500 is sure to create incredible memories for the next generations of car lovers.
