Like most car enthusiasts, you probably have a dream of getting behind the wheel of a sports car like Audi’s R8 V10 and driving hell bent for all get-out around a track like Austin’s Circuit of the Americas (COTA), one of the most exclusive tracks around.
Audi has made that dream come true for customers and fans as it has teamed with COTA to provide drivers with the opportunity to practice their driving skills behind the wheel of one its performance machines. Using the same track where R8 GT3’s compete in serious events, drivers of any experience level will have the opportunity to learn about driving.
Learning To Drive Properly Takes Work
As any car enthusiast knows, a lot of work and learning goes into proper high-performance driving. Many think they can jump into a high-performance machine, key it to life and race off around a track like COTA, blithely ignoring the facts. Those incredibly inconvenient facts include the ones that will save a driver’s life.
Imagine, if you will, the driver who has never done any training and who has never driven much faster than 75 – most people like to think this is the limit of their endurance, and even then it’s way too fast for some – jumping into an R8 GT3 and trying to maneuver through COTA. At some point, the newbie driver is likely to turn his or her dream ride into a nightmare as they lose it on a turn; go into an endo and end up stuffing the vehicle – which will likely be quite broken by the end of its spins – into a hay bale.
Audi’s new program, which opened reservations a couple of days ago, takes ordinary drivers, gives them training from experts and starts to give better competition skill to those people. The Audi program offers four challenging and unique programs, giving drivers dynamic driving experiences on the track.
Participants in the year-round program receive hands-on coaching from professional drivers. Their experience includes dynamic car control exercises, proper cornering techniques (it is an art) and high-speed lead and follow exercise on the track. There are three levels, half-day, one day and two days. Each program includes a classroom session that introduces the curriculum after which there is a hands-on interactive driving experience. For the program, a driver’s skill level and the model are matched. The training vehicles include the Q7, RS3 and TT RS and the great R8 V-10 plus.
Four Levels Of Performance Teaching
Briefly, here’s each performance teaching level:
- Audi Sport dynamic experience – Under the guidance of a pro driving instructor, participants receive an intro to understanding and practicing fundamental principles of performance driving techniques in the dynamic exercise paddocks, while behind the wheel of the Audi RS 3 and TT RS.
- Audi Sport track initiation experience – A half-day program, participants master vehicle control and handling in the TT RS, RS 3 and R8 V10 Plus by using dynamic exercises that demand a high level of coordination using both the exercise paddocks and the circuit.
- Audi Sport R8 track initiation experience – A one-day program, participants have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the R8 V10 Plus so they can discover its potential on the Formula 1 Circuit. Using race course sector training -- a method that allows participants to get acquainted with the track’s quirks before proceeding to tackle the whole course – participants drive the Audi R8 V10 Plus.
- Audi Sport R8 pro track experience – Following completion of the Audi Sport R8 track initiation experience, participants will be qualified for the Audi Sport R8 pro track experience. Designed for driving enthusiasts, the experience includes thorough training from the professional instructors and two days behind the wheel of the R8 V10 Plus. The days behind-the-wheel enable drivers to practice performance driving skills on the full course.
