You may remember the first article I ever wrote for Torquenews.com that detailed the horrifying story of a man who pulled out from a parking lot in a strip mall and found his engine could rev, but the car didn’t move, leaving him at the mercy of drivers who might or might not be empathetic to the plight of a driver betrayed by his ride. I said in the article that this issue had to be addressed quickly. Well, we have our answer now.
New News that is Really News. Read the following quoted directly from ABC News:
- “Hyundai is recalling about 41,000 small SUVs in the U.S. because a software glitch can stop the vehicles from accelerating.
- The recall came after pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It covers 2016 Tucson models with seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions made from May 20, 2015 to May 31, 2016.
- Hyundai says it started getting reports in June that the engines would rev but the SUVs wouldn't move after coming to a stop. The problem was intermittent and often didn't repeat itself, the company said in government documents.
- Engineers traced the problem to the transmission control computer that monitors driving to refine gear shifting. If the gas pedal is repeatedly cycled, the Tucson's may not accelerate, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Hyundai at first sent a service bulletin to dealers but decided to do a recall after meeting with the safety agency on Aug. 10.
- The recall began Sept. 7. Dealers will reprogram the transmission computer.”
Wherefore Art Thou Hyundai Quality?
Naturally, this happens right after I dropped an article praising the rise of Hyundai from the ashes of its first car which had abysmal quality control and had a virtually uncontrolled downward spiral in sales as a result.
It looks to the outside observer that Hyundai may have gotten so proud of its record in increasing quality, rising to the point where its two brands, Kia and Hyundai, took the first and third places on J.D. Power’s ratings for initial quality, that it may just have taken its eye off the ball for a nanosecond or two.
Like they say “Pride goeth before a fall.” Was it pride, was it hubris? I don’t know, but I do know that this is disappointing. Really disappointing. Even more disappointing is that they had to be pushed by NHTSA to recall the cars to deal with this software issue.

I know that you may get sick and tired of hearing me talk about the new paradigm of car manufacture created by Tesla, but, when Tesla has a problem like this, and they have had problems with AutoPilot for example, they rewrite the code and send it out overnight to every Tesla so affected. I’ve got to emphasize this. Because they don’t have the capability to send the updates over the air, the only way to deal with the issue would be to have a massive recall and do it at the dealership. They need, and every other auto manufacturer needs, to come into the brave new world and speed up the reaction time when faced with a grave problem. Do it. Enable your new cars with the ability to update their software over the air.
Whither Goest Thou Hyundai?
So, Hyundai is faced with both a problem and a huge opportunity. Their quality control rise has been phenomenal. Now they have to change their corporate culture away from denial and rapid reaction. They need to get with the new program. (heh, heh, see what I did there? Software, program? Okay, not that funny, but I tried,)
Seriously folks. We shouldn’t have to wait weeks or months to correct bad software code. It’s 2016.

I have the same problem my Fix it to start in manual or if I don’t immediately push stick to manual and there is no problem. It works for but it sucks that I brought this car last year for a lot of money I am going to get rid of it when I can and get something else. This my is my fourth Hyundia I guess I can filed it under shit happens it’s not personal. Now a days you as a consumer is pretty much suck. There is no consumer protection agency any more. It is the way it is. I don’t have the time to be angey, I should have taken the car back immediately it happened right away I didn’t because I live an hour and half from the dealership. 2016 Tucson, didn't take it in for the recall until this year...2018, transmission had no problems. The very moment after taking it in for the recall and getting the car back the transmission started acting up...I REGRET getting the recall done.... Something is very very wrong, Hyundai is fully aware of these issues yet seems to have done nothing at all to remedy the issues and continue to put these transmissions into the new models.... But the oddest thing is that I had ZERO issues until AFTER THE RECALL. THEY BROKE MY CAR!!
Hyundai/KIA has come a long way....when they first started out, they had awesome warranties that they actually backed up from what I heard. Even from idiots blowing their engines doing stupid things. But now we have this legitimate problem that is their own fault, and they refuse to handle it properly? Hyundai...is not Mercedes or Audi...just because a german company makes your stupid oil filters does not mean you make unreliable cars that break down with horrible warranties and people will throw money at you. Hyundai you compete with the likes of HONDA, look at your company's name..... Hyundai seems to have gotten ahead of itself....they have A LOT more work to do in order to proclaim themselves within the ranks of the top automotive manufacturers.
The interiors of Hyundai's seem dirt cheap to me, barely better than American cars, not as good as Japanese yet even.

Yea something is very fishy, the fact that our Tucson had zero issues for so damn long after the 2016 recall, and only had issues after taking it in for the transmission reprogramming. They literally broke my transmission.... it was just obvious. The dealer of all people broke the freaking car.....
I'm wondering if anyone actually had issues WITHOUT any transmission software update? A post above said the car already had it done before he bought it...… We own a second 2016 Tucson as well, but the VIN didn't fall in the range so it was not recalled and it runs fine, both were running fine, and only the one that got recalled started messing up the very same day I did the recall....all the exact same issues, stuttering from stops, and the 1st to second gear misshift that seems like it pops into neutral and revs just fly.
The 1st to 2nd gear mis-shift can be better reproduced at very light throttle..... That's why the dealer tells you to drive harder.....they know....they know way more than they'd ever admit publicly. Shameful, dishonest, but expected from a shady dealer.

I have owned 8 Hyundais in the past 9 years, The last one was a 2016 Hyundai Tuscon with that Dual Clutch Transmission, the worst transmission ever put in a vehicle. It did everything wrong and was dangerous to drive, what turned me off of ever purchasing another Hyundai was I called Hyundai corporate office spoke to one of the engineers explained the problem I was having with the transmission, I was told there was nothing they could about it. So much for Hyundai safety. Never Again

My 2018 Tucson has the DCT as well. You would have thought that they would have discontinued this tranny. I have called until I am blue in the face, Hyundai lives in denial. The warranty is BS. I have a 2015 Hyundai i40 Tourer. (Australia). It is the 1.7ltr diesel with the 7 speed dct. It currently has 164000 km’s. I have really enjoyed this vehicle but I have recently had issues with the transmission feeling like it drops to neutral when you accelerate. For example, I could be driving up a hill at 100kph and put foot down to accelerate and the transmission drops to neutral and the car just revs to around 4500. I back off and accelerate again and still doesn’t engage a gear. Do it again and it then engages the appropriate gear. In to dealer for service and explained but advised no issue. Not a frequent issue but has become more frequent over the last 10-15k kms. The other issue with not being able to accelerate off an intersection, I have put down to the turbo spooling down when bringing the car to a halt and when accelerating to go it lags badly and car moves but very slowly. I have learnt not to try to beat the traffic but to wait. When the car has stopped properly it has no issue with pulling away quickly. When it does happen, I just lift off a bit and reapply the accelerator and that gets the car moving again. The other issue I have is that it doesn’t always drop back to first gear at an intersection but it holds second which again makes it hard to pull away quickly. Mostly, I think this is a very good car, transmission until recently have really enjoyed, goes well handles well and very economical. Over 1000km on a tank without using the ECO mode.
Personally, I am disappointed that they have discontinued the i40 Tourer. A great medium sized wagon.

Just an update on my i40 Tourer. As I previously stated, I discussed the issues I was having with the local Hyundai dealer who has always serviced the car from new. They advised me that there were no adjustments that they could make to the DCT transmission to alleviate the issues I was having. As this is a company vehicle and I was handing it back Jan 2020, I said I would live with the issues. Had the car serviced at 165,000 km's and was again advised their was no issues identified with the transmission. Funny thing though, no further issues experienced when I got it back, Clearly they did something, maybe a software update, as I think this is a software related. issue. Anyway, car has now been handed back and I purchased my own car. A used 2017 Hyundai Tucson Highlander 2.0 ltr Diesel, 6 speed automatic. Vehicle was one owner with 18,000 km's. No issues to date, although I would make one point about led lights. On low beam in town they are great. Out on the highway at 110km's you can see very well in front of you until the light pattern cuts out and then you can't see a thing. I found it not comfortable to drive at 110 as I was out driving the lights. High beam great. Do you get the diesel in USA. I prefer them as good fuel economy and great torque when driving hills.most Hyundai petrol cars here in Aus use the DCT while the diesel uses the standard auto tranny.

I have a 2017 Hyundai Tucson Limited and it has a bad hesitation problem. Sometimes when I stop and then try to go the car will not move! When I'm driving sometimes the car slows itself down like the brakes are on. I have taken the car to the deanship in Danvers Ma many times and was told by the mechanic it can't be fixed. Now the dealership is a Nisson dealership they got rid of Hyundai! I'm going to get rid of the vehicle. It is definitely a dangerous vehicle. I'm not ever buying another Hyundai.

With my 2009 Kia Sorento with Dual Clutch Transmission I had the same problem for quite some time before I bought and plugged in an OBD Scanner when the transmission was in LIMP Mode. Gave me a code for one of the Transmission Control Modules. Had that module replaced and never had any problems since. Now have a 2018 Hyundai Value SUV with the Dual Clutch Transmission. The transmission does have Turbo lag but no other significant problems.

I recently purchased a 2017 Hyundai Veloster with under 40,000 miles on it and I immediately started having the Transmission slipping issues. Sometimes I have to put it in Reverse to get the transmission to engage. These vehicles are very dangerous to drive and I wouldn't recommend purchasing any Kia or Hyundai vehicle until these problems are resolved. This shows the companies unwillingness to do the right thing and keep their customers safe.

Hello There,
I suppose I am looking for advice. We have a 2016 Hyundai Tucson with turbo.
All the bells and whistles, leather seats, lane warnings etc.
We have replaced the turbo/engine at 101, 000 miles, and now we are faced with replacing those items again.
Currently we have stored the car to protect the beautiful exterior and interior until we can decide what to do with it.
It appears the best recourse is to part it out, or try to sell it to a mechanic that can repair it for cost.
We are trying to sell for 5k, do you believe that is reasonable?

I bought Tucson 2020 in Europe with DCT transmission. I can confirm that issue is still there. Hyundai didn't fix anything. I just wondering, how they didn't fix this issue after 4 years, and still selling cars with faulty transmissions? And very tricky to get repair under warranty, because issue appears randomly and hard to replicate.

I have to say. I LOVE my 2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport!! Smooth and fun to drive. I did take it in for the recall and they did their thing. I hadn’t noticed much of a problem before. And don’t have one now. Great little SUV. Great warranty. What can I say? It’s been great!

I will NEVER buy a Hyundai again! 2018 Tucson at 32,000 miles and can't get into reverse. Had gear actuator replaced, two weeks later a transmission. Now at 37,000 miles later, another gear actuator replaced. What's next? Another transmission? Not to mention how unsafe it was driving in traffic and the car looses power. How can they get away with all these dangerous issues? I complained to the NHTSA and I'll keep complaining anywhere I get the chance. Someone is going to get hurt or loose their life. I hope I can get rid of this piece of crap soon!
