The Tesla Model S GPS Problem, and How to Fix It

Work for Torque News, follow on Twitter, Youtube and Facebook.

Tesla Model S owners have reported a strange issue recently, the onboard GPS is getting stuck in a single position. Moving, not moving, charging not charging, the car on the GPS display never changes positions, even when the car is miles away, assumable stuck where the problem first occurred. If the owner tries to map a route somewhere the GPS begins it at the perceived point of the car and will not find the car at its actual location to properly map the route.

There’s a fix, sort of, solutions seem all over the place. Tesla Model S owners are reporting that GPS reorientation doesn’t seem to work, and powering off the touch screen doesn’t seem to work either, one owner had success powering off the driver’s screen though.

Some owners report having the issue on and off, which can likely be attributed to lost GPS signal, in which case, spend less time in tunnels and parking garages. Other owners have had the issue almost immediately after delivery, bringing it back to be addresses by Tesla so soon much be rather disappointing. Tesla thus far has been helpful in working the issue out with all their customers effected until it can be resolved.

Tesla has replaced the integrated antenna or the media control unit, MCU, for a few customers which did make their problems go away. Other owners reported Tesla resetting the MCU solving the problem, only to have it return and go through the process again. Seems like that’s just a band aid on the problem. Many are still convincing it is a software bug for a part of the computer that is not normally remotely updated and that can/will be fixed in an update to come, preferably sooner than later.

For now, it appears the best solution to the problem is to call Tesla customer support and have them remotely diagnose it. Owners should take screenshots of anything unusual in the app to show Tesla service for a faster, easier, and more accurate diagnosis. If there is a hardware fault it should be immediately obvious based on the data logs they can access from your car and will perform a hard reset when it is convenient for you to attempt to correct the problem should they believe it not to be a hardware issue.

Having this same problem, erratically. On hold for an hour+ to get support on the line. I also have very weak LTE bars, and the XM is much more sensitive to obstructive views than my portable unit in my truck. Bad antenna complex?

My 2015 P85D has this problem about once a year. It begins to drift on its map, then eventually freezes in place. The fixes you mentioned work for several months, then it goes bad again. It is dangerous when it's driving itself on the highway, loses it's bearings and drifts over to an adjoining side road, then it brakes suddenly, thinking it's on the other road with a much lower speed limit. We have noticed it seems to fail during periods of heavy rain. Has anyone else seen this happen with theirs, regarding rain? Anyone gotten any fixes that work, or explanations of what is going on?

In the above article, you mention to call Tesla Customer Support. They don't answer telephones any more. My problem is every time I start up the car, I must reboot in order for my naviation system to work. Why?

I have the same issue . Brought it in for diagnosis and they want to replace the antenna 63$ part. Unfortunately to get to the antenna they must take off the whole back portion of the trunk and trunk glass and replace all of it. Total cost 2500$

I have the exact same problem - SC wants $1200 for replacement of rear glass, stop light assembly and gps antenna (a $44 part). What an incredibly stupid engineering design!!!

I've had ongoing problems of this type with the "red arrow" GPS locator on my screen of my 2014 Model S. These started after the 4 year warranty was finished. I was advised by Tesla about 3 years ago to change the screen, and paid for this, but the problem with the stuck arrow worsened in the last year. I had the problem re-assessed about a month ago, and Tesla told me I needed a new MCU unit, and this would give me other benefits. I had this repair/upgrade done for a cost of well over C$2000. In noted an improvement in response speed including booting up for starting. However, since the repair, I noted periodic bouts of satisfactory performance, and frequent trips with bouts of poor performance with the arrow slowly deviating from the correct position on the map. One recent trip showed me driving up the middle of a large river channel. It was as though the position arrow was relying solely in the gyroscope, with no assistance from the GPS. Remarkably, on a long, multi-day journey in hot conditions, I noted that good performance of the red arrow on the map correlated with times of the day when the air temperature was below about 22C, and bad performance when the air temperature was above about 27C.

2022 Tesla model S - consistent problems with the GPS. scrambles the directions even the ones that I'm somewhat familiar with. Suddenly, I'm prompted to turn here, turn there, then turn again when those directions will simply not get me to where I'm going. From the comments others have a paid a lot of money for a new MCU antenna, only to find out it doesn't fix the issue. Very disappointed in that having paid a lot of money for this car that something rather necessary in today's world has proven to be so problematic for so many!!

Hey There,

I am wondering if anybody had the GPS Problem Fixed? I have an old 2014 Model S which GPS Position is stuck in Texas at the Tesla Production Center, probably where the car is made, although I am in Germany.

I replaced the SD Card, but this didn't fix he bug. I have still the old MCU, so I am thinking about changing it, which would be a nice update for the car. But honestly, for me not worth the money, if it doesn't fix the GPS Problem. Can anybody give me some recommendations, who gad a similar problem and fixed it? Is the MCU 2 really fixing the issue?

Next I try a new GPS Antenna, which I just plug in and see if it fixes the bug.

Best regards
