Toyota Highlander is bringing with it many new changes for the 2023 model year. Perhaps the most headline-grabbing difference is the addition of a new turbocharged engine.
More power anyone?
2023 Toyota Highlander Engine
First the facts.
Gone is the 3.5-liter V6 engine that Toyota Highlander owners and fans have known and loved for years. This one delivers 295 horsepower and 263 lb.-ft. torque.
Replacing it is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine – one that produces 265 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. torque. Toyota advertises this new turbo option as super-smooth and one that improves torque production by 17% over last year.
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nonmethane organic gas (NMOG) emissions for all gasoline-powered 2023 Highlanders are significantly reduced by more than 50%, making it much more environmentally friendly and conscious.
2023 Highlander MPG
The outgoing 2022 Toyota Highlander is rated at either 23 mpg or 24 mpg combined, depending on whether it is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Even with the much higher torque power numbers, Highlander 2023 is able to keep its miles per gallon ratings about the same or just a bit higher than 2022. Although exact numbers have not been revealed yet, Toyota promises “an EPA-estimate of up to 25 MPG combined”.
2023 Highlander Hybrid
Highlander Hybrid continues in 2023 with its same system from last year. Look for a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with two motor-generators.
This produces 243 net hybrid system horsepower.
The huge draw here is the gas mileage. Drivers can expect either 35 mpg combined for all-wheel drive and 36 mpg for front-wheel drive.
Just like RAV4 Hybrid is important to the RAV4 team, the Highlander Hybrid is extremely important within the overall Highlander lineup. Highlander Hybrid sales account for more than 25% of total Highlander sales.
