When the return of Toyota Supra was first announced for the 2020 model year, fans were excited and thrilled. Any why not – there is so much to appreciate here.
Fantastic and eye-catching styling. High performance. Cool interior cabin. Fastest Toyota in the Toyota fleet.
One of the drawbacks, though, is that buyers cannot get one for under $50,000.
That is, until now.
Introducing the 2021 GR Supra 2.0.
With this newest Supra trim level, owners can drive a high-performance Toyota Supra sports car. And save the better end of close to $10,000 in the process.
2021 Supra 2.0 Price
I mentioned price in the title of my story because I felt it is a significant factor in the decision to buy a new Supra.
Factory MSRP for the new GR Supra 2.0 is $42,990. This price jumps up quickly with Supra 3.0, which starts at $50,990.
Buyers can save at least $8,000 by going with 2.0 vs any of the 3.0 trims.
The 2021 GR Supra 3.0 Premium price begins at $54,490, while Supra A91 Edition (another new 2021 Supra trim) starts at $54,795.
For those of you who really want to purchase a 2021 Supra and are nervous about spending well over $50k, buying a 2.0 might be the way to go.
2021 Toyota Supra performance
We have not been used to seeing Toyota models utilizing turbocharged engines. This is not a common Toyota trait.
The redesigned 2022 Tundra will have it. And the new 2021 GR Supra 2.0 has it.
Look for a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbo inline four-cylinder engine with this newest trim. It produces a respectable 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. torque.
This is matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
In comparison, 2021 Supra 3.0 comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine which delivers 382 horsepower and 368 lb.-ft. torque.
In my opinion driving a GR Supra 2.0 is the right choice for many potential buyers.
Take me, for example. I am the type of person who does not need the extreme (but adrenaline-filled) 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds with a Supra 3.0 grade.
GR Supra 2.0 can get me from 0-60 in 5.0 seconds, which is plenty fast for me. During my evaluation, I actually loved the acceleration from stationary to my top cruising speed.
Also, top speed for both Supra 2.0 and Supra 3.0 is maxed at 155 miles per hour.
You will not miss out on much by choosing the turbo four.
2021 Supra 2.0 review video
I filmed and uploaded a walkaround review of GR Supra 2.0 on my “Toyotajeff” YouTube channel.
It is often challenging for people doing at-home research on a vehicle to solely use online brochures and website specifications.
I hope you find my video helpful while you are studying Supra. On a side but similar note, please subscribe to “Toyotajeff” channel. I have made over 800 Toyota review and how-to videos on all Toyota models. They are designed to be thorough, educational, and definitely more fun than typical YouTube review videos.
Interior of 2021 GR Supra 2.0
Black Alcantara and leather-trimmed sport seats are the cornerstone of the interior cabin. Alcantara material is often used in sport cars, as it provides more grip and does not get as hot as traditional all-leather seats.
Your eyes may also gravitate to the sporty carbon fiber accents.
Seats are comfortable and provide good neck and lower back support. Both driver and passenger seats are manually operated with 4-way lumbar support.
Controls are laid out nicely and easy to reach for both driver and passenger.
Standard features for 2021 GR Supra 2.0 include smart key push button start, leather-wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters, and 8.8” multimedia screen with rotary dial control.
Of course, you can upgrade your car to get many more options. Speaking of that…
Toyota Supra Safety and Technology Package
The retail MSRP for this Safety and Technology Package is $3,485.
Safety enhancements included in this upgrade are full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with emergency braking.
Additional technology includes 12 JBL speakers (upgraded from 4 stock speakers) with 500-watt amplifier, built-in navigation and upgraded touchpad rotary multimedia controls, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Supra connected services.
Supra is the first Toyota model to offer wireless Apple CarPlay. I do not mind using a USB cable in my 2021 Venza and my wife’s 2021 Highlander while using Apple CarPlay. However, I could get used to wireless. Hopefully, Toyota will integrate this into more of its most popular models in the future.
2021 GR Supra styling
This is one great looking car. I think Paris Hilton would describe it perfectly with her famous phrase, “that’s hot!”
2021 Supra has a sleek, sexy profile and draws attention from admirers. Three different people approached me during my week-long evaluation to let me know how much they liked my Supra. I had to break it to them that I do not own it. Sad times.
The front end is highlighted by 6-lens auto-leveling LED headlights and LED daytime running lights (also has LED taillights) with automatic high beams. This is such a unique and cool lighting pattern and shows Supra off nicely.
Look for standard 18-inch split-spoke alloy wheels that come with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. These tires are what Toyota refers to as “supersticky” and provide great control in tighter turns and winding roads.
If you like performance sound with your car, Supra 2.0 has it for you. Cat-back exhaust gives off a throaty, muscular roar at just the right times.
Time for your Toyota Supra comments
My impressions are this. Supra 2.0 has deceptively quick acceleration, more than enough power, great handling, and surprisingly smooth ride comfort for a sports car. Plus, it has terrific looks.
Oh, and you can save a ton of money in the process by selecting the smaller of the two Supra engines.
Double score.
Supra is often challenging to find due to low inventory. Individual Toyota dealers may have anywhere from zero to two or three in-stock at any one time.
When you find one, I recommend you test a Supra for yourself at your local dealership.
You may just fall in love.
Thanks for reading everyone.
If you had to choose, would you rather go with the four-cylinder or six-cylinder Supra? What trim do you think is the best value?
See you next story when I discuss potential new options and additions coming to 2022 Toyota Tundra.
