Today I am answering one of my “ToyotaJeff Reviews” Instagram page viewer questions. This one may benefit many of you waiting for a 2023 Highlander.
From Sean P: “Hey Jeff! Any word on when the ’23 Highlander will be out?”
Sure, Sean I have you covered. And thanks for following my content (you can follow my Instagram page here if you would like).
2023 Toyota Highlander Release Date
If you have been looking out for word on either 2023 Highlander or 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, I have some information for you.
Plan for October time frame as a pretty solid estimate for 2023 Highlander release date. If the production gods work in our favor, we should start seeing them arriving at Toyota dealerships in that range.
Of course, with the ongoing vehicle shortage affecting just about all manufacturers and regions, it is challenging to specifically guess inventory levels and supplies of Highlander or Highlander Hybrid.
2023 Highlander Changes
Toyota Audio Multimedia system is new for 2023 Toyota Highlander. Big multimedia touch screens. Fast command times. Wireless Apple CarPlay. Wireless Android Auto. Much more.
Screen sizes will be up to 12.3 inches in size, as will the more modern multi-information display screens behind the steering wheel.

Oh, and there is that small, tiny engine change coming. Yes, Highlander 2023 is abandoning its 3.5-liter engine in favor of a turbocharged one.
All Toyota Highlander gasoline SUVs for 2023 come with a standard 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. This produces 265 horsepower and 309 lb.-ft. torque. “Higher-torque, high efficiency” as Toyota says.
More 2023 Highlander Updates
- Wireless charging pad moves from inside the center console to the smart shelf storage under the multimedia screen.
- Cypress green color added to the lineup.
- Power folding mirrors now standard on Highlander Limited and Platinum (for both Highlander gasoline and Highlander Hybrid)

"Custom ordered" and paid a deposit on a 2022 Highlander Limited V6 gas the end of June. Was told that since it's not a hybrid that the wait time would be 4 to 6 weeks, 8 at the most. We are now at week 11, and still nothing. This will be our third Highlander--we do NOT want the new 4 cyl engine. Starting to get concerned that we may not receive the 2022 we ordered before Toyota starts production of the 2023 model...

I ordered and put a deposit on a 2022 Hybrid SLE model at the beginning of May 2022. The dealership just told me this week they are telling new customers it will take 24 months from the time they ordered. He told me it would take another 12 to 18 months for mine to arrive. Unsure at this point if we will wait that long as our current vehicle needs to be replaced.

Put a deposit for purchase of a Highlander Hybrid on June 2 and was assured by the dealer that the longest window would be 90 days....which is well past. When we contact them, the answer is always the same drivel about 'allocations'. They can't seem to advise exactly when allocation notifications are made thought I have been led to believe it is twice per month. The lack of answers about exactly how the process works, etc. are infuriating to me. We will wait for one more allocation and if nothing, will tell them to go to hell. We don't need one that badly.

I understand that there is a shortage but fail to see why neither the company or any dealers can be upfront and explain EXACTLY what is going on, how many of each car are being produced and when they will be shipped. Toyota is huge company with the resources to know the logistics of what is being produced, when they are being produced and where they are going.
What's the big secret? Why are dealers not up front?

The dealers have no way to know what their allocation will be. It is frustrating as all get out. Several months ago Toyota said it would focus on the LE trim for the restvof '22 production. I assume this was because they use fewer chips.
So October or November allocations may tell the story on what the next few months will bring.

After exactly 11 months of waiting, I followed up with my dealer. Still no news. He no longer wants to give a date because it is delayed every month. Why is it so long in Canada? I'm a little discouraged. I placed my deposit on October 20, 2021 for a Magnetic Gray Highlander Hybrid.

June 10th put $1000 deposit. Since then I opened up to Platinum or Limited and changed to any color. I actually love all the Toyota colors! No information at all from dealer. I’m glad to hear they moved to 2023’s my dealer has not communicated that to me.
I ordered a Platinum Hybrid

I ordered a Platinum Hybrid in Jan 22. I was told 3 to 4 months. Toyota’s website says 18 months. My dealer has kept me me updated but has no idea of timeframe. Last phone call from dealer was asked if we wanted to cancel order and return deposit. I’ve waited 9 months already what’s 9 more. I will wind up with a 2024 instead of 22.

Lol, all this waiting. I order my highlander hybrid in early October 2021 and was told that it would have to be a 2022 and around January-February, March at the latest. Month after month has gone by only to be told”no eta yet”. I was also told that once they find out an eta, it would probably be another three months before I recieve the vehicle. I e call everyone I could and have always been told the
same line.parts COVID and shipping. I finally got a call with an eta of mid December as a delivery date. That’s a 24 month wait!!!…IF I get it then. Now I’m hoping that the dealership has some sympathy towards me and offer some sort of package for such a long wait, but I won’t hold my breath.

I have been waiting since mid February for a Hybrid Platinum I also put an order in and a deposit. I would now rather get the '23 vs the '22. I got told that possibly next year. The sales people here basically have no clue.

Interesting that everyone says they “ordered”- my salesperson explained that money down put me on a list and that when a vehicle that closely matched what I am looking for comes in, if I am next in line, I will be notified. Then I have to decide if it is a close enough match for me. I was told it would likely be a year since I wanted a vehicle with more chips and a specific color when I provided a deposit in June 2022.

I placed an order for a platinum in March 2022 and was told the wait should be 3 to 6 months, but the dealership still have no idea when the vehicle will arrive, and advised that it may now have to be the 2023 model. As the finance rate has gone up quite a bit from March, if I need to go with the 2023 model, will I be able to keep the original finance rate, or will I be forced to take the current higher rate?

Washington State: Ordered my Platinum Highlander Hybrid in June of 2022. Dealership said 3-6 months for delivery. In September I spoke with the general manager and his exact words were, "Toyota is not taking "a la cart" orders. Of course they did not tell me that before taking my deposit! "They are simply building what they sell the most of". Encouraged me to wait and agreed that if by 11/1 I did not have a 22 Highlander he would bump me to a 23 for the same contracted agreement. On 11/2 spoke with dealership again and was told the Platinum was simply not going to happen and I should bump down to a Limited if I wanted a car anytime soon. I launched on him about the false advertising campaign on media and the lies I was told by personnel at the dealership. Corporate Toyota should be held accountable for allowing such practices and for the media push of "build your Toyota" which is a bunch of crap. About ready to move on to a different manufacturer.

Good for you, it all makes sense. I finally ended up purchasing a Subaru Ascent after having a Toyota Rav then a Highlander hybrid for over 10yrs. I decided if they didn't have cars, go where the cars were. I will admit, from a Toyota dealer, back in August of 2022, I did get a trade-in value of 93% of what I purchased my 2019 for. So, between holding it's value and all the craziness of Covid backspill, Toyota did come thru. I don't know how long I will keep the Subbee, but thru the winter, they do have a superior drive system. Sometimes, a vehicle is just a vehicle. For me, safety first (and availability). cheers guys and gals
