One of the most rewarding things about owning a hybrid vehicle is realizing you have been winning the “miles per gallon game”.
This is a chief reason for buying a hybrid in the first place – to improve mpg and save money in the process.
I have a genuine fondness for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Mainly due to its 40mpg combined, 219 total horsepower, versatility, and long-term reliability (plus, important updates were added for 2023 RAV4, 2023 RAV4 Hybrid, and 2023 RAV4 Prime).
What about, though, if you want to take things to the next level? If you really want to try and get much better than the 41 city / 38 highway / 40 combined that is posted on RAV4 Hybrid window sticker?
Perhaps these driving tips can help.
2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Smoothness
The sweet spot for hybrid fuel efficiency is smooth and even starts, smooth and even stops, and smooth and even cruising speed driving.
In other words, try not to accelerate too quickly when the traffic light turns green, or when you start up again after a stop sign. Coast into red lights and stop signs when you can. Minimize sudden stops.
And on the highway, try to avoid extremely high speeds. Keep your speed reasonable to avoid dragging your miles per gallon down.
Watch your RAV4 Hybrid Meter
Your Toyota RAV4 multi-information display will show your average fuel economy, but it also monitors your instant gas efficiency as well.
Watch the bar graph and make sure the current mpg bar is staying higher than your average mpg bar. This will ensure that you are maintaining, and hopefully increasing, your average miles per gallon.
Shed RAV4 Weight
When travelling, try and remove any unnecessary weight in your cargo area. A lighter vehicle will not bog you down, it and will generally improve efficiency as well.
Other 2023 Toyota RAV4 Tips
Keep your tires at the recommended pressure found in your Toyota RAV4 owner manual. You can adversely impact your mpg by having pressure that is either too much or too little.

Driving in ECO mode, especially in city conditions where you will do a lot of starting and stopping, will help for sure. This is precisely what ECO mode was made for.
EV mode allows your RAV4 Hybrid to drive in electric-mode only – no gasoline. However, this is designed to operate only at lower speeds and for just a short time. Maximize this one when you can. What could it hurt, right?
Coasting can help too. Try coasting down hills without your foot on the accelerator pedal. Coast for longer stretches into stop signs and red traffic lights, as I mentioned earlier.
