EDIT 5/27/19- Fiat Chrysler submits formal merger proposals to both boards of directors of FCA and Renault in a 50/50 acquisition. Both companies want to consolidate. The fact is that they really can benefit from each other, so as long as it isn’t about another LeCar econobox or Alliance compact!

9/24/2018 UPDATE TO ORIGINAL STORY: A source apparently close to Chrysler is indicating that the rumors that Chrysler is looking to cancel the 300 and Charger sedans are not true. And instead of building the Portal minivan Chrysler is looking to have the Dodge Grand Caravan replaced by a mini MPV based on the Portal Concept instead.

Let me start off at bat: Don Marchionne is a great man. Period. I didn’t agree with him with his paltry 5 year electrification plan for FCA Group, but with his expedited departure, we can now look back with definitive successes and failures. This is how the Era of Sergio Marchionne came to an end, and the Era of Jeep begins as the dominant force in the car industry, perhaps to equal that of Goliath General Motors, now that Jeep takes the world stage.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of FCA Chrysler laid out a 5 Year Plan to investors in Italy last month that will be his swan song before leaving in April 2019. Investors were eager to know what his plans were to electrify the entire portfolio. He gave few details other than throwing money and some numbers. But this week he leaves it to his minions at Maserati and Alfa Romeo to hash the details as to how the Ítalo-American auto company will become electrified.

FCA is recalling 4.8-million vehicles including the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500 and several other popular models over a concern that the cruise control system could get stuck in the set position and it will not shut off – potentially leading to an accident if the system will not deactivate as expected.

It was recently announced that the Brampton Assembly Plant was ending production of right hand drive vehicles, effectively ending any chance of the Australian market getting the Hellcat Hemi in the Chrysler 300, the Dodge Challenger or the Dodge Charger as the company prepares to phase out those brand Down Under.

The internet is ablaze today with news of a possible Hellcat Hemi-powered Chrysler 300 SRT, but I really don’t expect that we will see a Hellcat 300 in the United States – even though creating such a vehicle would be relatively simple for the FCA engineers.

Spy shots showing what appears to be a newer Chrysler 300 SRT wearing the drag radial tires from the new Dodge Demon have ignited an inferno of rumors about a widebody Hellcat Chrysler 300 – but I think that this is just a current foreign-market SRT 300 with some lightweight wheels and drag radial tires.

FCA has announced a voluntary recall of select all-wheel drive Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans over a concern that the front driveshaft bolts could work themselves loose, decreasing vehicle control and increasing the likelihood of an accident – although there have been no accidents of injuries stemming from this issue.
