With the recent news that both Ford and GM have elected to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for fast, 400V or level 3, electric vehicle (EV) charging, the effort to electrify the American auto fleet has reached a turning point. I think NACS has won the fight and the other fast charging standards will be phased out.

Ford may be planning to bring an all new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicle to the US market by sometime next year, following or perhaps prior to its release in Australia. That vehicle would be the Ford Ranger PHEV, a category of electrified vehicle that presently has no models on sale in the US market which means Ford would have the market to itself, if it decides to sell it here.

In an update to the company's online configurator, Tesla announced that all variants of the Model 3 now qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit. This lowered the starting price of the Model 3 to $32,750, which is impressive, however, when adjusting for inflation since Tesla unveiled the Model 3 back in 2016, the vehicle now starts at $26,950.

With 4 dear friends in tow, we completed a weekend wine tasting getaway in the beautiful Walla Walla and Red Mountain American Viticultural Areas. The wine was amazing (see some of my notes and recommendations below) and the Kia Sorento plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sipped gas while our party sipped wine; we managed to get about 37 MPG round trip, which included 3 full charges of the battery.

Both GM and Ford have publicly stated they are out to take the lead in moving the world off of fossil fuels and on to an electric vehicle (EV) future. Both have set their sights on beating Tesla, the currently dominant EV brand more or less in every major world auto market. I have been skeptical of their stances and strategy all along. Now, I’ve found some other analysts that agree.
