When it comes to really, really fast muscle cars, there have been very few sold in the last 60 years that could rival the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The supercharged 6.2L V8 creates 580 horsepower and 556lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful factory Camaro ever while the advanced suspension setup, chassis tweaks and a big brake setup help to make it one of the best handling Camaros of all time.
However, for some people having one of the fastest muscle cars ever built just isnt enough and for those people – Hennessey Performance has a collection of upgrade packages that can lift the output of the ZL1 to 650, 700, 750, 800 and 1,000 horsepower.
Today, we have a video of that 1,000 horsepower Hennessey Camaro ZL1 being tested on the quarter mile and whether you love the modern Camaro or hate the modern Camaro – this video is nothing short of incredible to anyone who loves American high performance.
First, some specs on the Hennessey Camaro ZL1 with the HPE1000 package. The 6.2L supercharged V8 has been removed and in its place is a 427 cubic inch (7.0L) GM LS Series V8 fitted up with two massive turbochargers. With the help of high strength internal components and a set of specially ported cylinder heads, this engine produces a bone chilling 1,000 horsepower at 6,400rpm.
One Thousand Horsepower.
To see what that 1,000 horsepower can allow the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to do, the folks at Hennessey took this beast to the drag strip with a whole bunch of video cameras to catch all of the action and the result is cinematic gold. In case watching a 1,000 horsepower ZL1 roar down the quarter mile from a half dozen different angles wasn’t exciting enough, this video offers a chance to hear the thousand horsepower twin turbo 427 in action and the sound of this beast is incredible. The combination of the rumble and roar of the 7.0L engine, the whistle of the turbocharged and the burst of air each time the dual wastegates open give this Camaro more audible attitude than almost any car on the road in America.
Sound aside, this 1,000hp Camaro ZL1 gets down the quarter mile in a hurry, with an elapsed time of 10.65 seconds and a trap speed of 135.38 miles per hour. That is 0-135 in about 10 seconds in street legal form and on street legal tires (drag radials...but still legal for street use as opposed to a full racing slick).
Also, anyone with any drag racing experience will notice that the driver of this Camaro ZL1 didn’t launch all that hard – presumably because the car has 1,000 horsepower and street tires – which is clearly displayed by the fact that it “only” pulled a 60 foot time of 1.92 seconds. For those who don’t know drag racing well, that is an incredibly slow start, as a good hooking low 12 second car can routinely pull 60 foot times in the 1.6-1.7 second range. Provided that this car could get away from the starting line a bit faster, there is absolutely no question that this beast could easily get well into the 9 second range.
In any case, regardless of the time turned by this Hennessey built Camaro ZL1, this video is definitely one that everyone who loves American muscle should watch…probably over and over again with the speakers cranked all of the way up. Enjoy!
