Allstate’s X the TXT Program Has 100,000 Fans

Allstate, a leading automotive insurer, obviously doesn’t want to pay out claims, which is why it has launched the fairly successful ‘X the TXT’ program that seeks to end texting while driving. It has attracted more than 100,000 fans at Facebook.

The brilliant part of the Allstate program is the DSGN8D TXTR (designated texter program if you’re over the age of 20). Basically, it is encouraging people to hand over their mobile devices before getting behind the wheel. It’s just like handing over the keys when you have too much to drink.

Allstate announced it is making stops at sporting events, malls, holiday events and more with a goal to register more than 25,000 DSGN8D TXTRs at the events and online at facebook.com/XtheTXT.

Grammy Award-nominee and Broadway star Jordin Sparks, actress Meaghan Martin (Camp Rock, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, 10 Things I Hate About You), pop rock band Honor Society, R&B singer Mateo and Big Rob – along with their DSGN8D TXTRs – have joined Jonas in supporting the effort by registering online and will be making appearances in select cities during the national tour.

This ties into an ongoing campaign called “Faces of Distracted Driving” by the federal Department of Transportation against distracted driving that features heart wrenching stories about loved ones killed by distracted drivers.

I think this effort will help drivers get the message. It has to start with the end user, the driver...deciding not to partake in distracted driving and this will help drive that message home.

I also decided to do something about teen (and adult) distracted driving after my three year old daughter was nearly run down right in front of me by a texting driver. Instead of a shackle that locks down phones and alienates the user (especially teens) I built a tool for teens and their parents called OTTER that is a simple, GPS based, texting auto reply app for smartphones. It also silences call ringtones while driving unless you have a bluetooth enabled. I think if we can empower the individual then change will come to our highways now and not just our laws.
