It may seem like a long time coming, because it has been, but the 2016 Model Year Miata introduced in July of 2015 is now being replaced by the 2017 Model Year car. Car makers are given wide latitude about how they designate model years, and the 2016 Miata has made the most of that flexibility. After 19 months of sales, Mazda is finally putting the 2016 Miata out to pasture and introducing the 2017 Miata.
The all-new ND Miata was introduced in September of 2014 at a gala hosted by Duran Duran. Shortly afterward, we all learned the truth about the new powertrain. It wasn't for another nine months that we all figured out that the new Miata was faster than prior generations, and in fact, faster than a lot of cars.

It was not long before the new ND-generation Miata started to win awards. We stopped counting in middle 2016 after which the Miata had won 8 major awards. Incredibly, the new 2016 Miata was winning awards concurrently with the outgoing 2015 still winning awards.
Sales were also impressive. Roadsters are a small niche, but in March of 2016 the Miata outsold every Porsche car model. By our estimation, the 2016 Miata has sold about 16,000 units in the U.S. so far. There are still some on dealer lots and the new 2017s will soon arrive.
The new 2017 Miata has the same base price and the only changes to the soft-top are some minor content adjustments that put active driver aids into the Club trim standard.
