If you have a pickup, you know the one drawback; No convenient covered cargo area. Yup, you can add a tonneau cover, add a cap, add some kind of cargo net near the tailgate. And still, putting groceries inside the back of the truck is a hassle, with the tailgate hitting you in the belly as you bend forward to load and unload it. Yup, you can use the back seat if you can wedge yourself into the spot next to the car you parked beside. Or… You can buy an F-150 Lighting with a frunk.
The frunk is easily my favorite part of the new Ford F-50 Lightning. Sure, it has a fantastic infotainment system and an amazing powertrain. So do a lot of trucks. Many of them are Fords. But none of the other Fords offer the cool frunk the Lightning has.
The frunk is not only huge, but it has multiple cargo areas, a neat divider that you can adjust to your liking, and a separate under-frunk area. You may wish to keep your 30-amp level 2 mobile charger in that spot.
When you park, just pull on through two back-to-back spaces. If you own a truck, you already do that out of habit. When you return to your Ford truck, pop the frunk, load up your stuff, and head home. When you pull straight into your garage, the frunk pops up, and you unload all your stuff easily into your mudroom. Can life with a truck get any easier?
The frunk in the Ford F-150 Lighting has a total storage volume of 14.1 cubic feet of space. For comparison, consider that the Ford Fusion Energi sedan had an 8.2 cubic foot trunk volume. The last time we checked, Ford’s F-150 lightning had the industry’s largest frunk. You can stuff golf clubs, a hockey bag, or any other big bulky item you wish into that space, and nobody you park near will be able to see it. Out of sight, out of mind.
If you are a contractor, imagine the space as a place to store your expensive tools. Leaving the entire cargo bed free for bulky long and wide materials transport.
The Ford F-150 Lightning’s frunk is a game-changer for homeowners and business owners alike. Tell us what you’ve used the frunk for in the comments section below.
