Mazda will recall its 2009-2010 Mazda6 sedan for problems with the airbags. Every automaker has struggled with airbag recalls of late, most related to Takata. Mazda didn’t name the maker of the airbag in this, the latest airbag recall of many in the industry. Unlike the Takata airbag recalls, Mazda's airbag recall for the Mazda6 does no involve airbags which deploy with too much force.
Mazda says that the problem is the Mazda6’s airbags may not deploy in a crash. The automaker says that a protective coating intended to keep out moisture doesn’t. This can cause corrosion to the airbag control unit power supply. If this occurs, the airbag’s warning light may illuminate. If the light is illuminated, the airbag will not deploy in a crash according to Mazda.
Mazda says that there have been no reports of crashes or injuries due to this safety defect. The recall affects 41,000 U.S. vehicles. Mazda will inform owners via mail, but you can look up your vehicle right now at this link to see if it on the list.
