The Honda Accord is a very popular car and a great used vehicle in some cases. However, some years have a track record of owner complaints. Why buy one of the troublesome Honda Accord years or trims, when you can pick and choose from such a vast population of cars.

Honda Accord V6 Transmission Problems
The first Honda Accord problem to know relates to the V6-equipped trims made in 2003. Honda had a transmission defect emerge in the V6-equipped Accords. The transmissions had a typical failure mileage of around 97K miles. The problem was severe enough that Honda launched a campaign to try to support those Accord owners with failed transmissions.
Here’s a shortened version of what one owner reported to CarComplaints.com. Take careful note about what the owner says about the prior recall on the transmission: “After searching through Craigslist in 2015, I find this gem, a 2003 Honda Accord ES with about 76,000 miles on it. It was in amazing condition! About 2 years later and with about 95,000 loving miles later, I'm driving 75mph in the fast lane at night with a constant flow of traffic with big rigs and all; my car jolts backward as if I slammed on the brakes at high speed. y car was making a loud awful mechanical machine noise and as I drove it off the highway its revs were at a constant 5... 5!! It also does not reverse! The car’s previous transmission recall was temporarily fixed in 2004 with a jet kit at less than 15,000 miles.”
Here’s a second owner who reports that the recall didn’t do the trick: “I'm the original owner of 2003 coupe, and like most of you when we received recall, we took it in to have it fixed. Now with 153000 miles, the transmission has failed, and even though this is the only trouble we've had with the car, it's disappointing that Honda knows there's a problem but won't fix it correctly. Called local Honda dealership, and they say Honda won't help fix it, but they hear/see the problem all the time with this year Hondas. We tried calling Honda customer service anyway, and as expected, they were very rude, said it was taken care of in 2004 and not under warranty now.”
Used Honda Accord V6 Models Years to Avoid
CarComplaints has labeled the 2003 and 2004 Honda Accord with its “Avoid Like the Plague” stamp. It rates the 2005 “Beware of the Clunker.” Why not just buy a 2002 or 2006? CarComplaints lists 2003 as the worst used Honda Accord year.

Used Honda Accord Brake Issues
Another issue widely reported by owners of used Honda Accords is related to brake issues. This problem has an average mileage rate of about 26K. Here’s what one owner reported: “Not something you expect from Honda. I have replaced rear brakes twice once at 15K and then around 30K and now recent service at 45K the Honda agency tells that rear brakes have worn AGAIN!!!” And this owner has a similar tale, saying, “I almost change rear breaks every year, it is really frustrating and costly. I tried to call dealer and honda. but they have no answer.” There are literally thousands of owners who have reported this issue.
Used Honda Accord Years To Avoid Due To Brake Issues
2007 to 2010 are the model years that most used Honda Accord owners report brake problems with. The problem seems to be the worst in 2008. These years are ones to carefully consider before buying.
Used Honda Accord Starter Problems - Years to Avoid
The used Honda Accord also had starter issues according to many owner reports. The two years most affected seem to be 2013 and 2014. Both V6 and four-cylinder used Accord owners have reported this issue. One owner sums it up, saying, “This is the second time I replaced my starter in less than a year!” The average cost to resolve the issue (temporarily) is $620.
If you own a Honda Accord and have struggled with any of these issues, please tell us in the comments below what your experience has been. If you are an owner with no problems, you are also most welcome to report that your Accord has worked flawlessly (so far). Your input may help a fellow used Honda Accord shopper make an informed decision.

Seeing comments like these, I bought a 2010 Camry instead. Guess what, Toyotas have issues too. They don't make 'em like they used to.
I own a 2007 Honda Fit Sport manual that's been stellar. It's on its last legs at 352k, but only 2 real problems (AC compressor and elec power steering module) in all that time. Aftermarket AC compressor $250 for part plus $250 for installation.
There's a reason it's hard to find used Hondas with a stick shift- no one wants to give them up.

Oil burns like no other but were honda people and have had all types of hondas going all the way back to a 89 honda civic hatch, 2003 honda civic ex to a 97 honda crv and now my 09 honda. So i have no real complaints. I love hondas. They have lasted me more than any other brand car ever has.

I bought my 2009 Honda Accord with 53,000KM on the clock 2 years ago. The brakes squeaked since day one and I've recently replaced the rear brake pads after failing a WOF for them. They still squeak but overall I'm pretty happy with the car. It has a very clunky transmission but aside from that no other issues.
I've recently had the vehicle stability control and engine light coming on every couple of weeks and staying on for a day or two. Apparently it could be a misfire in 2 cylinders.
Also I had to replace the battery after a year as it randomly died and was not rechargeable.
Overall a costly car to maintain and if you don't get regular service's done you'll soon know about it.

I have a 2004 ex Accord. Manual transmission. Only problem at 140k was ignition switch buzz which I replaced. Other than that it's wonderful car. Looks like new as well. Brakes squeak a bit all the time but I'm sure it might just be rotors are due. Changed transmission at 120k.

I bought a used 2007 Accord for my wife, and I am happy to report that the only thing I've replaced is the battery, which I got for free because it was still under warranty. This car drives like brand new and everything still works, it has a little over160,000 miles on it, we would like to get a newer car but this one shows no sign of needing replacement and I would hate to trade it in. Oh yeah it's the 4 cylinder.

I bought a 2003 Honda Accord

I bought a 2003 Honda Accord LX in March. Had an inspection done and an oil change. I was driving the car only to and from work (which was about a 6 minute drive for 5 days a week) so I wasn't packing on the miles but the miles were high when I bought it (230,000). One day in August I had made a decision to drive from Maryland to Philadelphia. I had my car checked and it was good to go so I drove there with no problem and before I went back to Maryland I had my mechanic father check my car. Again it was excellent condition to drive. It was raining bad that day so to advoid an accident and traffic I waited until night time. On my drive home I was feeling sleepy so I took a room. The next day I went to the gas station (5 min drive) and got ready for a 2 hour drive. Before I left the gas station this light popped up (maintenance required). I called a few people and they were like oil change. I had a bad feeling so I was like ok I'm going to take a different way than the highway. So while I was driving my GPS told me to go onto the highway 3 times and all 3 times I ignored it. 10 minutes into my drive (by herr's in Pennsylvania) my airbags exploded for no reason at all and I was in shock but I noticed that the car was still moving so I pulled into a farm drive way and everyone was helping me and calming me down. There was no impact on my vehicle. I took tons of photos and we cut the airbags I went on my way. Called Honda they told me go through my insurance since they replaced the airbags. Went through my insurance and they didn't do anything about it. Just this past week I was driving door dash and my car wheel stopped working and my breaks felt like there was a brick underneath it. I was stuck in the middle of the road like a car on the train tracks and cars were coming both ways. I called Honda again and again they said go through your insurance. I almost died twice from this car. Any suggestions?
Wow, at 230 thousand miles

Wow, at 230 thousand miles there are many things that would need replacement, as for the air bags, Honda has a recall on them and if yours were replaced then whoever replaced them is liable for them exploding not the insurance company, a bad wheel bearing will cause the wheel to lock up, the problem of mechanics is that a good professional one is hard to find but bad one's are every where, no one could have foreseen the air bag problem, but it is the fault of whoever replaced it, wheel bearings usually will make noise before they go out, but if your car was inspected by anyone that knew what they were doing they can be checked properly and the problem would have been found, same goes for the break issues, any mechanic that knows what they're doing will find a problem with them, it sounds like there was plenty wrong with your car and it just wasn't checked by someone that either didn't do a thorough job or they didn't know what to look for, if you have the V6 your timing belt may need replacing, and I'd say your car needs to be inspected by someone who actually does a thorough inspection. Really sorry for your troubles, Hondas are really great cars, but no car is without regular proper maintenance. And it's not that hard to tell if a car has been taken care of. But there are alot of crooks and unqualified mechanics out there.

Unfortunately Honda dealership said they replaced them and if anyone took their car to a different place we're to get the airbags done they would have to go through Honda for inspection before they approve it. I checked my airbags the date is 7/8/2002 ... The recall was 2014. Not sure if that means anything.

I have the 2008 V-6 EX-L sedan with 178000 miles. It runs really well. All the luxury electronics still work. It drives smooth. The transmission at times is a bit clunky when shifting from reverse to drive but i haven't any major problems with it. I just replaced all the brake shoes, new tires and front alignment. The only complaint i have is the body sounds rather hollow or like the doors are very light weight, The road sound comes through the body and theres a few interior rattles but the premium factory sound system sounds really good to drown out the road noise.
