The Honda Accord is a very popular car and a great used vehicle in some cases. However, some years have a track record of owner complaints. Why buy one of the troublesome Honda Accord years or trims, when you can pick and choose from such a vast population of cars.

Honda Accord V6 Transmission Problems
The first Honda Accord problem to know relates to the V6-equipped trims made in 2003. Honda had a transmission defect emerge in the V6-equipped Accords. The transmissions had a typical failure mileage of around 97K miles. The problem was severe enough that Honda launched a campaign to try to support those Accord owners with failed transmissions.
Here’s a shortened version of what one owner reported to CarComplaints.com. Take careful note about what the owner says about the prior recall on the transmission: “After searching through Craigslist in 2015, I find this gem, a 2003 Honda Accord ES with about 76,000 miles on it. It was in amazing condition! About 2 years later and with about 95,000 loving miles later, I'm driving 75mph in the fast lane at night with a constant flow of traffic with big rigs and all; my car jolts backward as if I slammed on the brakes at high speed. y car was making a loud awful mechanical machine noise and as I drove it off the highway its revs were at a constant 5... 5!! It also does not reverse! The car’s previous transmission recall was temporarily fixed in 2004 with a jet kit at less than 15,000 miles.”
Here’s a second owner who reports that the recall didn’t do the trick: “I'm the original owner of 2003 coupe, and like most of you when we received recall, we took it in to have it fixed. Now with 153000 miles, the transmission has failed, and even though this is the only trouble we've had with the car, it's disappointing that Honda knows there's a problem but won't fix it correctly. Called local Honda dealership, and they say Honda won't help fix it, but they hear/see the problem all the time with this year Hondas. We tried calling Honda customer service anyway, and as expected, they were very rude, said it was taken care of in 2004 and not under warranty now.”
Used Honda Accord V6 Models Years to Avoid
CarComplaints has labeled the 2003 and 2004 Honda Accord with its “Avoid Like the Plague” stamp. It rates the 2005 “Beware of the Clunker.” Why not just buy a 2002 or 2006? CarComplaints lists 2003 as the worst used Honda Accord year.

Used Honda Accord Brake Issues
Another issue widely reported by owners of used Honda Accords is related to brake issues. This problem has an average mileage rate of about 26K. Here’s what one owner reported: “Not something you expect from Honda. I have replaced rear brakes twice once at 15K and then around 30K and now recent service at 45K the Honda agency tells that rear brakes have worn AGAIN!!!” And this owner has a similar tale, saying, “I almost change rear breaks every year, it is really frustrating and costly. I tried to call dealer and honda. but they have no answer.” There are literally thousands of owners who have reported this issue.
Used Honda Accord Years To Avoid Due To Brake Issues
2007 to 2010 are the model years that most used Honda Accord owners report brake problems with. The problem seems to be the worst in 2008. These years are ones to carefully consider before buying.
Used Honda Accord Starter Problems - Years to Avoid
The used Honda Accord also had starter issues according to many owner reports. The two years most affected seem to be 2013 and 2014. Both V6 and four-cylinder used Accord owners have reported this issue. One owner sums it up, saying, “This is the second time I replaced my starter in less than a year!” The average cost to resolve the issue (temporarily) is $620.
If you own a Honda Accord and have struggled with any of these issues, please tell us in the comments below what your experience has been. If you are an owner with no problems, you are also most welcome to report that your Accord has worked flawlessly (so far). Your input may help a fellow used Honda Accord shopper make an informed decision.

Got a 2018 Honda Accord EX-L (mileage 92,000). Got it in February of this year.
Only persistent issues Ive had is i believe minimal.
1st issue: *LOW TIRE PRESSURE
I have it checked and nothing is wrong with any of the tires. Pressure is correct and tires are in really good shape. Even had them rotated.
I reset the command center and it’ll come up again with in weeks.
2nd issue: *Screeching Breaks
Every time I take the car through drive through wash, never fails. Every time i break it’ll screech. I vacuum it, I forget and when I leave starts up again til I guess they dry out…
*** ANNOYED••• But the car is very good in every other aspect…

07 Honda Accord special edition 5 speed. We were driving down the road and the front and side airbags deployed without reason. Honda replaced after I went after them, but had to sign a waiver to fix her for 4 grand. 220,000 miles and she requires a full replacement of oil every 300 miles. The oil is just going out of the exhaust. Just lost compression in the 4th cylinder. Engine light is now flashing. Other than that. Good car.

You probably have 1 or more bad tire pressure sensors. They are inside the tires. Any shop can fix them, but at about $150 a piece, I wouldn't bother.

I own a 2014 Honda Accord - EXL. In January 2020, my car started periodically not wanting to start. The Honda dealership service department replaced the battery which was only about a year old. It continued having problems starting. They then replaced the starter which helped briefly but then started not wanting to start again. They then replaced the starter button and that seemed to work for a few months but it has started not wanting to start again, It starts out occasionally not starting but then increases in frequency until it happens just about every day. I may have to try to start it 6 or 7 times before it finally starts.

I own a 2013 Honda Accord-EX and began having starting problems at around 98,000 miles. The dealer replaced the battery at a prorated cost. This seemed to solve the problem until at 99,000 miles it happened again and also the backup camera screen would black out periodically. Until my next appointment I drove around with a jump starter just in case. The dealer couldn't recreate the problem and did a software update. This temporarily fixed the issue but when I left the car for an entire day for its 1000,000 mile tune up, the technician was able to recreate the problem and found a bad ground wire. Problem solved.. Now, at 102,000 miles, there are no more starting or backup screen issues.

Hi that rattle is not the oil
Permalink
Hi that rattle is not the oil. That rattle is a bad VTC actuator. I have a 2012 accord 4cyl w 185k and recently was at the dealer for the airbag recall and this issue was brought up. They told me its the reason my car makes a noise upon cold start. I researched (because I trust nothing) and its an issue with all 2008-2012 accords. The sound is the vtc actuator snagging the timing chain, thus stretching it and wearing it and the tensioner. If the chain snaps, engine failure. Had this been recalled like it should have been, people like you and I could have gone to get it fixed under warranty. Instead Honda only issued service bulletins to the dealers. Was super happy with my Honda until finding this out. Dealer wants 2k for the work (lol) and I'm having trouble finding a shop that wants to take the front of the engine apart to do it. I'll also mention, Everytime I do a brake job, I am replacing calipers. They are ALWAYS seized. No excessive wear to the pads but the calipers seize pretty quickly and warp the roaters and then I have a shake upon braking until I wear the pads enough to justify doing the brakes.

Have a 2008 accord 2.4L, 5 speed manual, 192k miles with the original clutch, although planning on changing it at 200k. Main problems was brakes and road noise, brakes were fixed with Centric rotors and Akebano pads all around, stops better, produces less dust and have almost 100k on them with no problems. Road noise is still prevalent but lessened through replacing factory sound proofing in some areas along with putting some in the doors. There is a problem with the tpms system, but haven't worried about it, just keep the tire pressure checked every few months. Most other problems that plague 2008 models are taken care of with normal maintenance.

The problem is that many of you bought used Hondas--and you don't know how they were treated by their previous owner(s). Given proper regular maintenance, Hondas run well for hundreds of thousands of miles. Those of you that had starter problems and spent over $600 on another one tells me you need a new mechanic-considering
the fact that a new rebuilt starter is about $65 -$125 !! On my previous Accords, the original starter lasted over 300K miles & over 200K miles. Many people put a new starter on their Accord--when in fact the battery is at fault, too. Most cars--Accords included--need regular REAR brake maintenance (usually cleaning). IF you just drive the hell out of any car without regular maintenance, trouble will be your "regular / best" friend. Most Accord engines will last a LONG time--IF operated between 2000 and 3000 rpm 99% of the time. Hard to help anyone who has written a posting that if so "disjointed".

Replaced rear whell bearing sets for about $200. Was getting a low hum/groan from rear. 170k on the odo still runs and rides pretty darn good. Overall,
Very, very satisfied. No auto is perfect. Hope to go 300k before making any decisions on replacement. Would give 8.5 out of 10.

It's true about starter replacement on the 2013 Honda Accord 4 cylinder. I had to replace mine way too soon and pricing was about $600-$700. It was just out of warranty. Never had this happen before. Feel like Honda should have covered it.
I have a 2014 6 Cylinder

I have a 2014 6 Cylinder Honda Accord and had the starter replaced. It was OK for awhile but it started having issues again. I also had issues with the door locks which Honda eventually got that repaired. The fan motor for the AC unit was replaced as it would slowly stop working when using heat or AC. It is still not working as well as it should. I found if you take the bottom cover of the fan motor off and use something to tap the housing, it will start working again. The biggest repair I had to make was replacing the ABS modulator as it quit working and many of my dash warning lights came on and would not turn off. The cost of doing this was around $1100.00 dollars. It took from February 2021 until July of of 3021 to get this repair made because of the chip shortage. I currently have 143,000 miles on my car.
