"In my 30 years of owning Toyotas with no issues, I took a chance with Chevrolet, and it begins."
Imagine owning Toyota vehicles for 30 years, and you buy your first Chevrolet vehicle. It's a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.7-liter TurboMax. You like the look and capabilities of the new Silverado, so you pull the trigger and get it.
However, when the odometer hits 5,000 miles, the problems with the new pickup begin. That's what Phil Layton says in a Facebook post on the 2019 - 2025 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Owners Facebook page.
Phil's troubles begin at an unexpected 5,000 miles mark.
Phil says he's already had the truck, which only has 5,000 miles, at the dealer to replace the serpentine belt, and then shortly after, they also had to replace the tensioner pulley.
Then, he gets the truck home, and now the truck's check engine light comes on, and it looks like there are other problems with his brand new Silverado 1500. Here is Phil's unfortunate story.
Phil's frustration is understandable as he shares, "I was never a hater and even a skeptic about everyone that said they had issues with their Chevrolet Silverado 2.7-liter, but my day (week) finally came."
"I have a 2024 2.7 with only 5,145 miles on it. A constant chirping sound has come from the serpentine belt for the last month."
"I took it to the dealer, and they tell me "the belt is completely glazed" (with 5,000 miles on the clock), and they replace the belt."
Phil's disbelief is evident as he recounts, "I told them the truck has 5000 miles on it, and the serpentine belt should last between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. He said, 'I agree. I've been doing this job for 17 years, and I have to tell you this is a first for me; I have never seen this before, and I have never heard this happening before.'"
"In any event, he said it's ready for pick up. Before I got off the phone, I said, This is covered under warranty, correct? There's only 5000 miles on the vehicle and it's a 2024."
You can hear Phil's frustration as he recounts the dealer's response.
"He said that serpentine belts are not covered under the GM warranty as they are considered "wear and tear" items. Obviously, I came unglued on the phone and told him that if I had 50,000 or 60,000 miles on the truck and this happened, that makes sense, but 5,000 miles and you're telling me that it's not covered?"
He Had the Truck Back for A Day, and There Are More Problems
"So, the next day, the chirping sound comes back. I took it back to the dealer, and they tell me the tensioner pulley needs to be replaced, and a bearing is seizing up, and they're replacing that as well."
Next, It's the Check Engine Light
He continues, "Then, this morning, I'm heading to the gym at 5:30 am, and when I use both turn signals, they would say "check L signal" and "check R signal," but there are no codes."
Phil is connected to the myChevrolet mobile app to check the truck's Vehicle Status report on his phone.
"Then, about two hours ago, my check engine light came on on the way home from work. There is an error code, P00FF, on the Body Control Module (BCM)."
"So, I disconnected the negative battery cable to "reset" the battery, but there was no fix. My check engine light is still on. I tried a few other troubleshooting techniques, but no go. The check engine light is still on."
Phil Does Some Research
"I tried to do some research on the BCM for the 2024 2.7, and from the few posts I've seen from others, the majority seemed to go the lemon law route since it's a pain to actually narrow down and fix the "electrical issues."
"In any event, in 30 years of owning Toyotas with no issues, I took a chance with Chevrolet, and after only 5,000 miles, the problems begin."
"I'll give Chevrolet the opportunity to fix the issue, but from what I'm hearing and reading, it doesn't look promising."
It's Back to the Dealer
After returning his new truck to the Chevrolet dealer, he gets back this report from the technician who worked on his pickup.
After performing a systems testing and inspection, I found the chirping noise originates from the A/C compressor and goes away when the clutch is engaged. Repair requires A/C compressor replacement.
The check engine light is on—found code B2HA3. I performed system testing and inspection and found the park position switch sticking, causing short-to-ground on circuit 553 and the code to set. The repair requires a transmission control replacement.
After Reading This Report
Phil says,
"Has anyone heard of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) "failing" on these trucks? I can't find a single case where the TCM failed on the 2.7 Silverados."
"I'm thinking this is gonna be an electrical issue that's ultimately not gonna be able to be resolved, and it'll be a Lemon Law buyback for me; but, curious if anyone has ever heard or seen of a TCM failure on these trucks before?"
A user on Reddit says,
"I picked up my new 2024 Silverado LT on Wednesday of last week. Friday, I was leaving my driveway and got this message, and the vehicle went into limp mode. The truck has 248 km on it. The dealer brought it in today and says the TCM is faulty and needs replacing."
What is the Chevrolet Silverado TCM?
The TCM (Transmission Control Module) is a computer that controls the automatic transmission's operation, including gear shifting and hydraulic pressure, ensuring smooth and efficient transitions.
Should Phil Pursue the Lemon Law?
Phil lives in Florida, and the Lemon Law covers "Defects or conditions that substantially impair the use, value or safety of a new vehicle (these are called "nonconformities"). These defects must be first reported to the manufacturer or its authorized service agent (usually, this is the dealer) during the "Lemon Law Rights Period," which is the first 24 months after the date of delivery of the motor vehicle to the consumer."
"If the manufacturer fails to conform the vehicle to the warranty after a "reasonable number of attempts" to repair these defects, the law requires the manufacturer to buy back the defective vehicle and give the consumer a purchase price refund or a replacement vehicle."
Phil Has to Give Chevrolet Time To Fix His Silverado
Under Florida's Lemon Law, a "reasonable number of attempts" to repair a vehicle generally means three repair attempts for the same defect or 30 days of cumulative time out of service for repairs before a vehicle is presumed to be a lemon.
Conclusion:
It's important to note that if Phil's Silverado has been back to the Chevrolet dealer for repair of the same recurring problem at least three times, he or his attorney must give written notification by certified, registered, or express mail to General Motors (not the dealer) to afford a final opportunity to repair the vehicle.
If the Chevrolet dealer cannot fix his 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.7-liter TurboMax, he could be in for a long, uncomfortable ride.

I have a 2022 Trailboss with a laundry list of issues since new. Whoever owns Chevrolet needs to go bankrupt and lose their job. Chevrolet doesn’t care about there issues and they keep sweeping them under the rug. When you pay as much money as they want for there vehicles and you get the sucky customer service that comes along with it and on top of that there crooked sales team. I have almost went broke taking care of the issues with my truck. They have the upper hand because they have laws to protect them and nothing to protect the buyer. They know that. They do want they want. Will never buy another Chevy product. They need to close there doors for good…. Toyota is way to go. They have the best product and they stand behind there brand. Toyota these days are more American than junk Chevrolet.

I had a 2019 Sierra (same platform as the 2024 Silverado, it uses the GM "T1" platform, and I also experienced a TCM failure on the truck at 50,000km (about 35k miles). It failed after I parked the truck in a parkade, and I had to push my truck all the way outside of the parkade for the tow truck to be able to load it up. That was a pain! Trucks with under 100,000k should not be experiencing TCM failures.
GM then refused to give me a free loaner vehicle because they "had to figure out if the TCM would be covered under warranty". A week later when the truck is fixed, obviously it was covered under warranty, but they never did give me a free loaner. All this happened in the middle.of a snowstorm too.
I now drive a slightly older Ram, a 2017, and it has been flawless during the time I've had it.
To be fair to GM though,.my dad has a 2024 Silverado with the 3.0 diesel and he absolutely loves it. The 3.0 diesel.is a great motor with the 10 speed. It is a really nice truck.
The TCM failure I experienced was with the 8 speed (5.3L and 8 speed was a common combo in 2019 and the 10 speed was only available on the top trims). it would be nice to know if these failures mentioned in the article occurred on the 8 or 10 speeds, I think GM still offers the 8 speed on their base model trucks don't they? Or have they fully dropped it now for the 10 speed?

2022 suburban. Full warranty, bumper to bumper plus extended.
Truck blew engine in New Mexico after I only used 13000 miles. GM left me stranded for 3 months in Iowa camping as they maxed my card out. I was stuck using a rental truck in which caused my dig to require emergency surgery do to the cramped conditions. Not until 3 months into it was told they could ship my vehicle me. The rental came to 14870 dollars. GM originally said was covered. Long story short. GM stuck me with a 14780 bill. They offered 3000 for the rental and to buy the truck back at much less then I paid for it.. This is literally " highway robbery". If you own a new chevy be prepared to have an extra 20k sitting around to rectify the damage it will cause to your life..GM let me hang to dry. I am currently working towards suing GM for the money they "borrowed" then atole from me. (Gm pay reimbursement on rentals) well they claim to anyway...
Sincerely disappointed. Shame on you GM..

I've had lots of American cars and every brand new and used. I bought a 77 Monza used (biggest POS I ever owned) a 79 Camaro brand new, a 86 Dodge Daytona (2nd biggest POS) and much more. My dad back in the 70s said any car you buy once it hits 60k it's time to sell it. My parents bought brand new Fords in the 60s when I was a kid and every one of them had issues. They bought a brand new 68 Cutlass Supreme Court and it has speedometer issues on Day 1 and every time he dealer "fixed" it, it broke again.
Will never buy American again unless it's a vehicle I just love and am willing to accept all the crappy issues that will come up.
My first Toyota was a used Avalon that I got with 100k miles and put another 100k plus on it before trading it in. Then I got a Kia big mistake then a Camry which I also loved.
Then I went with a new Tacoma, put 120k miles on it in 6 years and traded it for another Tacoma. The biggest issue I had with the Dark Gray Taco was the paint. After 6 years it looked like crap so I got the 6 year paint protection and went 6' bed too.
Lesson here - American vehicles are fraught with issues many times from Day 1. Toyota is the way to go (but don't ever buy the first year of a new or redesigned model! Exception to that rule - our 21 Sienna).

Yeah, my 27 year old Tahoe has been pretty trouble free as well. It’s tough to beat the trucks of the mid to late 90’s. They were new enough to have fuel injection and electronic ignition, but before active fuel management, though many also vouch for the early 2000’s Chevy 5.3L with AFM disabled. All the new stuff is suspect. I suspect even a brand new Toyota won’t last like his old one. That’s why my Tahoe was worth scrap value 10 years ago and today they are selling between $17K and $24K. The manufacturers need to clean up the designs, use standardized control modules and simplify (and lower the price).

Original motor and transmission still going strong! I used to be a Ford guy, but you couldn’t get me to buy another Ford pickup! My GM truck has been the most dependable and least expensive to maintain vehicle that I have ever had. And given the mileage, I use it quite frequently and extensively. My livelihood depends on it! It is completely and utterly ridiculous to compare a toyota in general to a brand new invention. (2.7 whatever) that's like comparing rocks to plastic... whoever wrote this is clearly too uneducated to understand what vehicles are worth comparing. Take note they didnt say anything about what engine or Vehicle the Toyota was when comparing it to the brand new invention chevy put out (tiny motor- full size truck). Not defending chevy. Any problems will need fixing. But come on... talk about click bait. Pathetic is the only word I can use to describe this article, I recommend the publishing company find someone with a brain capable of finding real news rather than someone good at creating clickbait content

Phil,
Don't be stupid! If the tensioner was bad, the belt is gonna be a goner! But the bottom line is you bought a full size truck with a 2.7litre engine. Maybe the EPA is happy, but did your Toyotas have mouse motors! Were they full size trucks? The GM pickup is the best selling vehicle in the world, handily outselling Ford. Toyota would love to have their sales volume and strangely enough, the same number of 250,000 plus mile vehicles on the road. Your problem is with an inept dealer, not your truck brand!!!

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 HD 8.1 L with the Allison M74 trans and 2016 Silverado LT Crew Cab 4x4. Previously I owned a 2007 Classic Body Silverado with the 5.3L. I had no problems with the Cat Eye Body, other than general maintenance. Couldn't kill that truck. I've had 0 problems with my 2002 Sierra. The 2016 Silverado has had the ABS, Stabilitrac light off and on for 3 years now. Transmission had to be changed out at 120k miles. Mind you, I tow trailers daily, but that didn't stop the 2007 Cat Eye truck. That 2.7 L TurboMax is a spiffy little engine but i fear it's still in its infancy and the problems have only just begun to surface.
I've had horrible experiences with Ford trucks, Quarter and Half ton. I won't be purchasing another Chevy after this one. GMC, although the same parent company as Chevrolet, is a much better built truck. When a GM vehicle has electrical issues it's probably best to get rid of it as soon as possible. When the electrical holds up, you won't find a better truck, anywhere. They've all got issues now and then. Toyota probably is a better built brand, but I don't care for the looks of them.

I bought a new 2024 silverado 1500 RST LT 3.0 Duramax Diesel. With less than 5000 miles the rear main seal was leaking lost 2 quarts oil and had the truck trailered to the dealership. They replaced the seal. Right after the wire to the starter was arching out. Caused issues starting. Brought it back and they replaced the cable to the starter. Drove it less than 50 miles and a Brake assist warning light came on brought the truck back two more times. I was told master cylinder and module is faulty and needs to be changed.
They said it was safe to drive. Looked underneath the truck this morning and there is an oil leak again. Same place.
This is my first new vehicle and 1st truck.

Again it was fine for about a month now it's parked again. The engine light is staying on and or flashing, it was a rough idle/misfire, sluggish at times, and even has shut off a time or two.. Lemon Law varies from State to State. Check owners manual. Owners Manual spells out the necessary steps to initiate Lemon Law. Be sure the vehicle qualifies for Lemon Law before starting the process. Process likely requires a letter sent via US Postal Service to the regional address listed in the owners manual. Some State laws are difficult to use. Lawyer may become necessary. Expect mileage penalty up to the first repair appointment. If first repair occured at 2k miles, truck currently has 5k miles. Money owed per mile for 2k miles. Penalty deducted from total money owed to owner. Lemon Law usually beneficial versus trade in.
