The next-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is popular, but the subcompact SUV is not Subaru of America's hottest model. Forester is sizzling hot, as I reported here. But the Crosstrek gets some spotlight because the popular model set a new all-time record for March sales.
The Crosstrek Plays Second Fiddle To The Forester
The remodeled Crosstrek is far behind the aging Forester, in second place for March. However, it was the best-ever March for Crosstrek. Crosstrek had a strong showing with 14,527 vehicle sales, up 3.5 percent compared with 14,040 sales in March 2023.
Crosstrek Is Still Falling Behind For The Year
Even with the increase, Crosstrek is down 7.6 percent, with 38,405 sales through the first three months of 2024. In contrast, Forester is up 59.7 percent year to date.
Crosstrek Stays Ahead Of The Outback
The Outback sales followed closely behind the Crosstrek, with 13,501 vehicles sold compared with 13,245 in March 2023, an increase of 1.9 percent. However, Outback is now in third place overall, with 35,213 midsize SUVs delivered to customers in the first three months. Outback is up 7.5 percent for the year. The next-generation Outback is still another year away.
Here are the top three Subaru model rankings for March and the year.
- Subaru Forester - 21,045 (+105%) 48,546 YTD
- Subaru Crosstrek - 14,527 (+3.5%) 38,405 YTD
- Subaru Outback - 13,501 (+1.9%) 35,213 YTD
How Is The 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness Doing?
I would like to see Crosstrek Wilderness sales. Unfortunately, Subaru of America does not release Crosstrek sales by trim level. I think the Crosstrek Wilderness is a massive hit with active customers. The Subaru Wilderness sub-brand has been a smashing success. The Crosstrek Wilderness arrived late last year and is now built in America.

Subaru Corporation switched Crosstrek production to the Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant so customers in North America could get the popular subcompact SUV sooner. The 2024 Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness are made in Indiana.
The Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness are powered by the new 2.5-liter Boxer engine, which gives the models 30 additional horsepower. The Crosstrek Base and Premium trims are made in Japan and have a 2.0-liter Subaru Boxer engine.
Is the Crosstrek Inventory Improving?
The Subaru plant in Japan was recently shut down for eight days in February due to an employee's death at the Gunma manufacturing facility. So, customers looking for Crosstrek Base and Premium trim levels could experience delays this spring and summer.

The Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness are not affected by the shutdown, and inventory levels of the three U.S.-made trims should improve.
Here is the 2024 Crosstrek pricing for customers looking for a new model.
For 2024, the Crosstrek is available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels and has a starting price of $26,290 (the same MSRP as the 2023 Base model equipped with the Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission).
The 2024 Crosstrek Premium has a starting price of $27,440, Sport ($30,290), and Limited ($32,190). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225).
What is the price of the Crosstrek Wilderness?
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness will be the most expensive Crosstrek trim level. The all-new Crosstrek Wilderness costs $33,290, including dealer destination and delivery fees ($1,295).
One Last Thing
Buyers are now in the driver's seat. With the higher financing rates and improving inventory, it's a buyers' car market. Subaru retailers are now more willing to negotiate prices with you. You could get below MSRP pricing on some models with the added manufacturer incentives.
