I covered the Subaru microchip shortages and how they negatively affected its new model production. Due to the scarcity, Subaru had to shut down new model production multiple times. Subaru is being proactive and will develop new microchip technology for its new electric models and next-generation vehicles.
Subaru Corporation announced they will be involved with a large consortium of companies producing advanced microchips for their automobiles. Its new automobiles will use advanced microchip semiconductors for autonomous driving technology and multimedia systems.

Subaru says the new state-of-the-art semiconductor technology is required to achieve advanced computing power. The Advanced SoC Research for Automotive (ASRA) group was formed on December 1, 2023. The consortium will research and develop SoCs for automobiles using chiplet technology to install SoC in mass-production vehicles from 2030 onward.
The participating auto manufacturers (in alphabetical order) are Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Corporation, Subaru Corporation, and Toyota Motor Corporation.
The electrical component manufacturers are Denso Corporation, Panasonic Automotive Systems Co., Ltd., Semiconductor Companies Cadence Design Systems, Japan, MIRISE Technologies Corporation, Renesas Electronics Corporation, Socionext Inc., and Synopsys Japan.
The announcement says approximately 1,000 semiconductors are used in each automobile, and the types vary depending on the application. They will be used for Subaru's new EyeSight safety technology and high-tech Starlink multimedia system.
Advantages of Chiplet Technology
- Higher performance and multifunctionality
- Higher yield chips
- Timely commercialization of SoCs with functions and performance optimized for end-user (automotive companies) requirements
How it affects Subaru customers
In 2030 Subaru vehicles, customers will see new autonomous vehicle technology. Subaru aims to have zero fatal accidents in its vehicles. Customers will see faster touchscreen functions on its multimedia systems.
The announcement says ASRA aims to establish in-vehicle chiplet technology by 2028 and to install SoCs in Subaru and the automaker's vehicles from 2030 onward.
