How fast did the 2016 Subaru WRX STI Nurburgring race car go during the grueling 24-hour race? Carlo Van Dam recorded the best time of 9 minutes 08.288 seconds. He had the fastest time again this year of the four drivers who shared time behind the wheel. Scroll down to see the fastest lap video.
The 2016 Subaru WRX STI NBR is based on the production WRX STI released in 2014. The race car has been changed to left-hand drive and it gets performance parts from Subaru Tecnica International. The performance car gets technology from STI’s many years of motorsports involvement.
The 2nd back-to-back win
This was their 2nd back-to-back win in the SP3T class following wins in 2011 and 2012. This year’s NBR race car had new improvements that featured a lighter body, reduced inertia moment, better aerodynamics and enhanced front downforce. STI had to change the engine settings suited to smaller restrictors resulting from regulation changes. It’s powered by the EJ20 2-liter-turbo engine.
Cornering speed was improved
The new changes to the 2016 Subaru WRX STI NBR made optimum use of the low center of gravity and superior balance of the horizontally opposed engine to improve cornering speed on the twisty Nurburgring track. Subaru says body weight was reduced mainly in the overhangs to cut down the car’s moment of inertia, and the aerodynamic performance of the car was also optimized for better balance of down force between the front and rear.
Subaru/STI General Team Manager Hideharu Tatsumi commented after the race, “By bringing together all the strength of the team and with the support from the Subaru fans, we have been able to achieve this result. However, Nurburgring has reminded me that it is not easy to conquer.”
