The 2022 Subaru Forester will be the safest new model in Subaru's lineup. The newly-refreshed Forester will come with the automaker's next-generation EyeSight x with improved safety technology. Recent investigations into Tesla's Autopilot crashes by the NHTSA bring up questions about Subaru's safety technology.
Is Subaru's EyeSight safety technology safe?
Subaru Corporation says, "EyeSight x's advanced driving support system is not a self-driving device. When driving, always check the safety of your surroundings and the operation of your car. When you see a dangerous situation, you can immediately use the steering wheel, brake operation, and avoid danger."
What are the advantages of Forester's EyeSight x?
EyeSight helps the driver stay in the correct lane, decelerate in front of curves on unfamiliar roads, and assist in hands-off driving in stop-and-go traffic jams. "The stress of traffic jams is dramatically reduced," according to Subaru. EyeSight does not support hands-free at highway speeds.
When it becomes difficult to control the steering wheel, such as when the driver suddenly loses consciousness or falls asleep, the driver's condition is detected, and the vehicle stops while calling attention to the surroundings.
Does EyeSight help reduce accidents?
Subaru says EyeSight has reduced the rear-end collision rate by 84 percent and the pedestrian accident rate by 49 percent. The rear-end collision rate for vehicles equipped with EyeSight is 0.06 percent. Subaru says Forester's new EyeSight helps reduce fatigue from long drives.
EyeSight assists in collision avoidance even in scenes that could not be avoided with the current-generation technology, such as when encountering cars, pedestrians, and bicycles at intersections with poor visibility and when turning left or right.
With the current-generation Subaru EyeSight, the Forester earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. With EyeSight x, the 2022 Subaru Forester will be even safer, but it will not have self-driving capabilities.
When will the 2022 Subaru Forester be available for U.S. customers?
The 2022 Subaru Forester has been delayed because of the global microchip shortage and production shutdowns in Japan. Subaru of America should reveal the refreshed Forester this fall. Check out the other new Forester upgrades coming to U.S. models below.
