Tesla famously does not roll out vehicle improvements based on model year. However, for regulatory purposes, vehicle manufacturers are still required to separate their cars based on the manufacturing year.
In the past few days, Tesla has just started delivering the official 2025 Cybertrucks, identified by the 10th character on the VIN.
The 10th character on the VIN denotes the vehicle’s model year. “R” is used to identify 2024 vehicles, and “S” stands for 2025 vehicles. On the new Cybertrucks, the 10th character on the VIN has changed from “R” to “S”, officially identifying the vehicles as 2025 Cybertrucks.
In the past couple of days, brand-new Cybertruck owners have started to take delivery of trucks with S on the VIN, and these new owners say the 2025 Cybertruck is significantly improved over the 2024 version.
One such brand-new Cybertruck buyer is Eddie Lipscomb II. The new Cybertruck owner from Dacula, Georgia, picked up his 2025 Cybertruck this Sunday and says that the 2025 version is a significant improvement over the 2024 vehicle.
Eddie shared his thoughts about the 2025 Cybertruck on the Tesla Cybertruck group on Facebook.
Here is what he wrote…
“2025 AWD CYBERTRUCK (Only one 2025 version on the lot, the rest were 2024)
Ordered Thursday at 4 pm
Picked up Sunday at 4 pm
Drives extremely Smooth and Quiet compared to the 2024 Foundation Series Cyberbeast.
I’m coming from a 2023 Tesla Model Y Performance.
I left the Dealership and went straight to drop it off to get a High Gloss White Wrap, including the fenders and front/rear Bumpers. I had the truck for 45 minutes and dropped it off. I will pick it up on Tuesday (Wednesday if my schedule doesn’t permit it).”
In addition to his post, Eddie shared several pictures and a video of his brand-new 2025 Cybertruck. The video shows a message left to him by Tesla service staff on the Cybertruck dash reading, “Congratulations, Eddie Lipscomb.”
Naturally, given Tesla does not update its vehicles based on model year, people were curious about the purported improvements that Eddie was able to discern by comparing the 2024 Cybertruck to 2025.
Another Cybertruck owner, Jimmy, asks…
“Congratulations! I’m just curious: how did you compare the drive difference between the Foundation Series Cybertruck and the 2025 model? I have the Foundation Series Cyberbeast, and it drives like a cloud!”
This is a fair question, and Eddie responds by saying that before he picked up his 2025 Cybertruck, he was able to get a demo drive in the 2024 Foundation Series Cybertruck. Going back and forth between the two, Edie says he has noticed the 2025 version was much more silent than the 2024 Foundation Series Cybertruck.
Eddie writes…
“The Foundation Series Cyberbeast DEMO I drove was way louder than I anticipated with the “jet sound.” It only had about 115 miles, but it was very noticeable. My Cybertruck AWD today was extremely quiet. It may have been just that particular truck. Not sure. But the POWER was Insane; it made me dizzy when I hit it 3x.”
This is interesting, and the difference in noise, vibration, and harshness might be due to Tesla fixing several powertrain issues plaguing the 2024 Cybertrucks.
Tesla already has a recall for defective drive inverters that can possibly cause this harshness when driving.
A few months back, the EV maker was also quietly replacing some Cybertruck motors to improve vehicle comfort and decrease motor noise.
We also broke the news last week that some early Tesla Cybertruck models were shipped with front differential fluid that was underfilled by about an inch.
According to the Tesla technician who revealed this problem, the improperly filled differential fluid can cause problems during changes in temperature.
Perhaps the 2024 Cybertruck Eddie test drove was afflicted with one of these issues, and that is why he was able to notice an improvement when driving the 2025 Cybertruck.
Whatever the case, it’s good to see that Tesla is at least addressing some of the major issues plaguing the Cybertruck.
