Hertz Is Selling Their Used Tesla's At Clearance Prices - Why?
Hertz is selling their older Tesla Model 3 rentals cars for as low as $14,000 - this is a great deal for someone looking to get a Tesla vehicle today at a low prices. There are a few things to keep in mind with these vehicles, however. First, we got an official response from Hertz that I've posted at the bottom of this article. Second, if considering buy a used EV at Hertz, look into the following:
1. Do your research Before you buy any used car, it's important to do your research. This is especially true for Tesla Model 3 vehicles that are now legacy compared to the new Highland. Read reviews, compare prices, and make sure you know what you're getting into.
2. Get a pre-purchase inspection Once you've found a Tesla Model 3 that you're interested in, it's important to get a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic. This will help you identify any potential problems with the car.
3. Be prepared to negotiate as Hertz is motivated to sell these cars - be prepared to negotiate on the price. Don't be afraid to make a low offer, and be willing to walk away if you can't get a good deal. With a little planning and research, you can find a great deal on a used Tesla Model 3 from Hertz.
Here are some additional tips for buying a used Tesla Model 3:
- Look for cars with low mileage.
- Avoid cars that have been in any accidents.
- Make sure the car has all of its original parts.
- Get the car's history report.
- Take the car for a test drive.

There are reports that Hertz is dumping their EV fleet of Tesla's in order to buy more gas cars because of costs. This is interesting to me because the point at which an EV is more cost-effective than a gas car is fast approaching and over time will become a wide gap in favor of EVs.
Not only that, gas is a finite resource that will one day be gone. The power of the sun and batteries will be able to be harnessed for as long as the sun is in the sky.
Many of these are 2021 Model 3 standard range vehicles with a starting range of 248 miles - however, that range is likely degraded to about 10% of that, so expect a range more in the area of 223 miles.

Why Is Hertz Dumping Their Tesla EV Fleet?
Hertz could be dumping their Tesla EVs because it has been a few years of usage and the mileage is just getting too high - to the point that the warranty will soon be void. This is simply a cycle that car rental companies go through for their vehicles.
The second is that a rental car gets beat up and used by many different people over time, so the wear and tear is going to be greater.
Others have commented that it looks like Hertz is just selling everything. However, the news does seem to show that Hertz is selling its EVs because of higher expenses related to collision and damage, and opting for more gas-powered vehicles.

I do agree that the collision cost of an EV is expensive - as is a windshield replacement. I had to replace my 2022 Model 3 RWD windshield last year, and it cost $1,400. My old Honda Fit would have been about $400 for the same thing.
The Tesla windshield is a lot more complex with a camera system attached to it and requires careful calibration.
The average price of these used Teslas seems to be around $17,000 to $18,000 and mileage varies between 62,000 and 82,000 or so.
This move may prove costly for Hertz in the future as EVs get cheaper and more competitive with gas cars...
I think that Hertz is dumping their fleet for two reasons:
- They are turning over their fleet of older cars
- They are buying fewer EVs due to collision costs
As I mentioned earlier, the CEO of Hertz also talked about this today, and I am including a video snippet of that below.

What do you think about Hertz selling its Tesla EVs? Is this a good move, or will Hertz go down with legacy auto?
