Just Like That, My Tesla Model 3 Is Driving Itself Everywhere (While I Supervise)

My Tesla Model 3 is driving me everywhere now - from a software update that installed today. I'm just supervising it while it drives.

Tesla's Software Update For FSD Makes My Model 3 Drive Everywhere

In an instant, my Tesla Model 3, which I bought in 2022 and is a rear-wheel-drive model - the cheapest Tesla - can now drive itself as Tesla's FSD software is now going out to most Tesla vehicles for a 30-day free trial of its full self-driving software.

Summary:

  • I got the 30-day free trial for FSD today, and it drove me to the gym with no interventions.
  • My Tesla is likely going to go up in value.
  • Will Tesla sell vehicles in the future or keep them?

I got the 30-day free trial for FSD today, and it drove me to the gym with no interventions.

I got an update on my Tesla app for my phone today, and it was a patch that I thought was just going to be a minor update. However, this was no minor update - it was to enable Tesla's Full Self-Driving software for my car.

It took about 30 minutes to install, and then it was ready to use. I was going to stay home today, but realizing I could test out this software made me want to go somewhere, so I went to the gym.

This software enabled me to drive to the gym today without having to intervene at all, making the drive a much more smooth and relaxing experience.

My Tesla is likely going to go up in value

My Tesla has gone down in value, and I could probably get $25,000 to $30,000 for it on the private market today, but I think that is going to change. There's going to be an event like a "California Gold Rush" coming for Tesla vehicles because they are getting close to becoming autonomous ride-hailing vehicles that can drive people around.

I think the future is going to be very interesting for Tesla because the rapid progress of its FSD software may mean that it doesn't sell any future vehicles beyond the new Roadster to customers. It might just create robotaxi-like vehicles.

However, Tesla has made no mention of not producing vehicles for customers anymore, but this is something I've been thinking about - will Tesla decide to make their own robotaxi vehicles instead, now that FSD is progressing so well?

Will Tesla sell vehicles in the future or keep them?

This leads me to believe that Tesla is going to focus more on autonomous transport for mass production and for "not" mass production vehicles - its existing line up and the upcoming new Roadster, they will still be autonomous.

The compact car may indeed just be the robotaxi vehicle with where things are headed with FSD. The only reason Tesla would sell the compact car to customers now is so that customers could operate it in a fleet and Tesla could simply take a cut of profits.

Or, Tesla could operate its own fleet and take 100% of the profits. It's going to be interesting to see what decision Tesla decides to do.

I think Tesla may do both - they don't want to alienate other people from operating their own robotaxi fleet, so they will sell them to customers.

Used Tesla vehicles are going to go up in value the moment it is announced that they can be used in ride hailing services. How long will this take? I think it's a couple of years away and that's it.

I'm going to be using my Tesla a lot more now to get a feel for this FSD update. I'll be out of town for a few days this month, so I won't get a full 30 days free trial. Nonetheless, I'm excited to try it out and see how it goes!
