Tesla Model Y Sales in 2022
The Tesla Model Y is 3rd in the entire world in not just EV (electric vehicle) sales - it is 3rd in the entire world in total auto sales, whether the car is gas, electric, hybrid, or some other variant.
Elon Musk said that one day, the Model Y will be the best-selling vehicle in the world by revenue and then by unit volume, and this is proving to be true.
When you look at best-selling passenger vehicles for the year 2022, you get this (source: fiatgroupworld.com):
1: Toyota RAV4/Wildlander: 1,015,700 million units
2: Toyota Corolla/Levin sedan: 991,600 units
3: Tesla Model Y: 747,500 units
4: Honda CR-V/Breeze: 733,300 units
5: Toyota Camry: 673,300 units
6: Toyota Hilux: 632,500 units
7: Nissan: 566,500 units
8: Toyota Corolla Cross/Frontlander: 530,300 units
9: Ford F-150: 525,100 units
10: Tesla Model 3: 482,200 units
Two EVs are in the top 10: the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3. This year, 2023, there is a chance that the Model Y will take the top spot. You'll notice that Toyota has 5 of the top 10 vehicles. Toyota is a very large vehicle manufacturer of gas cars, but they are not yet making pure EVS. It appears they are winning by a large margin when you look at this chart, but it is not so.
Over the next few years, as EV adoption continues to soar, Toyota's vehicle sales will continue to decline. They must come up with a compelling EV, or their business is going to collapse.

Tesla Model Y and Model 3 and Future Vehicles
When you look at Model Y sales for 2023, it is on track to sell well over 1 million units for the year. With Giga Berlin and Giga Austin continuing to ramp and now at 5,000 vehicles per week, and Giga Shanghai continuing to make hundreds of thousands of Model Y vehicles, there is a good chance that for 2023, the Model Y will be #1 and the Model 3 will be #8.
When Tesla released the Cybertruck, and it gets to volume production, I expect it to make the top 10 list here too. Then, when Tesla releases its Compact Model vehicles, those will enter the top 10 as well. Tesla will replace Toyota as the kind of auto sales.
Tesla will not only just replace Toyota as the king of auto sales, but they will have a suite of software that greatly increases the value of their vehicles. Tesla vehicles will one day have FSD (full self-driving) turned on, which will make their vehicles autonomous and able to be used as a Robotaxi.
This is the big bet with Tesla. If all Tesla does is produce cars, they will do just fine and grow to several times their size over time. If the software portion ends up working out, look for 10x or more growth over time.
