After Getting Snowed In All Night, Here's What I Did to Get My Tesla Cybertruck Polar Proofed

After getting a typical New York snowy welcome, here’s what this woman did in order to polar proof her Tesla Cybertruck.

New York’s first decent snowfall of the season has arrived, and if you’re a Tesla Cybertruck owner, you might be wondering how to tackle the icy, snowy roads with confidence. This thought crossed Jacqueline Evans’ mind when she posted on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners Facebook group: “We had our first decent snow in New York so can someone help guide me on how I should be setting the Tesla Cybertruck to drive in this snowy weather? My last car was a Range Rover, and I never changed any settings before driving in the snow. The Range Rover was absolutely amazing in the snow. I hope the Cybertruck is too. I’m just not sure if I should keep it in my normal driving modes or not.”

If you’ve just upgraded to the Cybertruck and are facing snow for the first time, you’re not alone in having questions. The good news? The Cybertruck is engineered to handle winter conditions brilliantly, you just need to know how to optimize its settings.

Why Adjust Your Tesla Cybertruck’s Settings for Snow?

Unlike a traditional gas-powered SUV like the Range Rover, the Tesla Cybertruck operates using advanced electric powertrain systems and integrated driving modes tailored for varying terrains. While the “Normal” driving mode might suffice for light snow, more treacherous conditions like black ice, packed snow, or slush demand some fine-tuning to ensure optimal traction and control.

The Cybertruck’s onboard software offers specialized settings like “Slippery Surface” or “Snow Mode” (if available), which modify torque distribution, traction control, and regenerative braking. These adjustments are key to preventing wheel spin and ensuring better grip on icy roads. Unlike the “set-it-and-forget-it” mentality you might have had with the Range Rover, the Cybertruck’s customizable settings are an opportunity to fine-tune performance for specific challenges.

Real Owners Share Their Tips

Fortunately, members of the Tesla Cybertruck Owners group are here to help. Take it from Oliver Cheah, who responded to Jacqueline’s post: “If it’s your first decent snow, you can just drive like normal. Most slushy 1-2” deep snow isn’t going to affect the Cybertruck at all. If you feel any slip, just turn on the basic slippery surface option.”

This is great advice for light snow conditions, as the Cybertruck’s weight and all-wheel drive system already provide excellent stability. However, it’s good to familiarize yourself with the “Slippery Surface” setting, just in case you encounter more challenging patches of snow or ice.

Rakesh Vaid offered a different perspective, focusing on visibility: “From my experience, this is just as normal except try to keep the windshield clean as it is a big hassle.”

Winter driving isn’t just about traction; visibility is equally important. The Cybertruck’s massive windshield is a design marvel, but it also means keeping it clear of snow and ice is critical for safety. Investing in high-quality washer fluid rated for extreme cold and ensuring your wipers are in top condition can make a huge difference.

How to Get Your Cybertruck Ready for Snow

Here’s a step-by-step guide to polar proofing your Tesla Cybertruck:

  1. Activate Slippery Surface Mode: If the roads are icy or packed with snow, this mode optimizes your Cybertruck’s performance by adjusting torque and traction. Access this option via the “Driving” menu on your screen.
  2. Lower Regenerative Braking: Strong regenerative braking can cause the wheels to lock up on icy roads. Switching to a lower setting reduces this risk, making your drives smoother and safer.
  3. Use Preconditioning: Warm up your Cybertruck’s battery before driving. This improves efficiency and ensures systems like defrosting and cabin heating are at peak performance.
  4. Defrost Smartly: Take advantage of the Cybertruck’s app to preheat the cabin and defrost windows. This not only saves time but also ensures your windshield is clear before you hit the road.
  5. Check Your Tires: Winter tires are highly recommended for optimal grip. Even though the Cybertruck’s weight helps with stability, dedicated snow tires make a significant difference in icy conditions.
  6. Keep Your Windshield Clean: Follow Rakesh’s advice and prioritize visibility. Always have a snow brush and ice scraper on hand. Also, carry extra washer fluid in case of freezing temperatures.

Why This Matters for You

Making these adjustments isn’t just about surviving winter – it’s about thriving in it. The Tesla Cybertruck’s advanced technology gives you an edge, but only if you use it effectively. By understanding and applying these tips, you can:

  • Drive with confidence, knowing your vehicle is set up for the conditions.
  • Maximize safety for you and your passengers.
  • Protect your Cybertruck’s systems and maintain its long-term performance.

Whether you’re dealing with light flurries or a snowstorm, these tweaks will ensure that your Cybertruck is not only snow-ready but snow-dominating.

Questions for You

  1. What’s your experience driving your Tesla Cybertruck in snow? Have you tried using any of the advanced driving modes?
  2. Do you have any go-to tips for keeping your Cybertruck safe and efficient during the winter months?

Good tips. Chill Mode on my Model 3 was excellent and my dual motor AWD couldn’t be broken loose from wet pavement or snow without extreme measures.

What I would have done was trade it in immediately and purchase a reliable vehicle with good consumer reports.

The Cybertruck is not meant for snow. The wiper can not handle the weight of snow, headlights get clogged and the trunk cover will dump all snow in the bed.
