I Was Always a Chevy Guy, But Everyone Who Owned a Toyota Tundra Said They Didn't Have Any Regrets, And So I Made a Move

This owner thought he’d always drive a Chevy, until a quiet switch to the Toyota Tundra showed him just exactly what it was that he’d been missing out on.

Toyota didn’t become one of the most trusted names by accident. Over the years, it’s earned that reputation by building vehicles that outlast trends, outwork expectations, and quietly build loyalty mile after mile. But behind every spec sheet and reliability stat, there’s something even more interesting: the stories of people who once swore by other brands until something changed. I came across one of those stories tonight in the “2023-2025 Toyota Tundra Owners” Facebook group. Lynd Gemberling, who made the switch from Chevy to a 2022 Toyota Tundra, shared something that was an honest and powerful reflection of his trucking experience.

Here’s Lynd’s experience in his own words:

“I was always a Chevy guy. Everyone who owned a Tundra said they didn’t have any regrets. And now neither do I. Why would I? Toyota demonstrates a commitment to its customers and to its core business. My truck, a 2022 Platinum, was priced similarly to a Chevy Custom with a Trail Boss package. Chevy was 60k & mine was 61k. The economic value is with Tundra. Having strong engine power with twin turbos and running 87 octane gas gives the Tundra an advantage. Maintenance cost definitely gives Toyota the advantage and lower cost. I remember the old Toyota commercial where people would say it’s more than a feeling. Toyota makes me happy to say that it is more than a feeling. In today’s world, it’s nice to feel that Tundra feeling. My Tundra is the best truck for the market. I will never buy another Chevy.”

Why the Tundra Makes Sense for So Many Drivers

Lynd’s experience highlights a common realization among truck enthusiasts: brand loyalty is powerful, but actual experience and data-driven comparisons often challenge traditional assumptions. It’s fascinating to see how quickly a single vehicle can shift perspectives so profoundly.

His detailed breakdown of value comparisons, particularly regarding pricing, fuel efficiency, maintenance costs, and engine performance, underscores the Tundra’s impressive real-world benefits.

For instance, the ability of the Tundra to deliver robust performance with twin turbocharged V6 engines, all while using cost-effective 87 octane fuel, gives it a distinct edge in both economy and convenience for lots of drivers.

Maintenance and Reliability

Maintenance costs, as Lynd mentioned, are another crucial area where Toyota consistently demonstrates advantages. Lower long-term costs have been a hallmark of Toyota ownership, and when problems arise, Toyota isn't scared to tackle it head on. When Lynd brought up that old Toyota commercial “It’s more than a feeling,” he wasn’t just being nostalgic. It was the kind of line that sticks not because it’s just catchy, but because it turns out to be true.

For him, the Tundra isn’t just a smart financial move or a dependable machine, it’s also a daily reminder that some companies still care about what they build and who they build it for. His decision wasn’t driven by specs alone, but by a feeling that this truck, and the company behind it, had earned his trust.

The Conversation Didn’t End There

But as always, every story has multiple perspectives, and the comments under Lynd’s Facebook post quickly proved that truck loyalty is a deeply personal experience.

Eob Eob shared some contrasting experiences, stating, “Wait till you put a load in it, or try to do truck stuff. It’s more of a 4x4 car than a truck. I put a load of tamarack firewood in the box, and the chassis flex was scary. All plastic front body and no tow hooks. Mine is falling apart.” Lynd swiftly responded, reassuring readers, “I haul heavy on it. Topsoil, lumber, and supplies to camp. It handles like a true 3/4 ton truck. No sway and all go. Using 10 ply Nitto Grapplers.”

It’s moments like this that show how different truck ownership can feel depending on what you’re hauling, how your vehicle is equipped, and what you expect it to do. One owner’s complaint can be another’s proof of strength. Sometimes, the difference comes down to tires, loads, or even the kind of driver you are. That’s what makes these exchanges so important. They don’t just highlight flaws or features but open the door to perspective. And in a world where specs don’t always tell the full story, firsthand experience matters more than ever.

Joe Kincaid added another perspective, affirming Lynd’s sentiment:

"I agree with you, I definitely miss some of the extras my Lariat had but so far, 44k miles and no issues besides a couple easy recalls. I'm extremely happy with the Tundra."

That level of reliability mirrors another owner's experience after driving 24,000 miles without a single issue. But as I mentioned earlier about a previous report I have done, sometimes things like recalls do come in the picture.

So some skepticism still lingers for some potential buyers, and that's understandable. Brent Moller voiced reservations about the engine itself, commenting, “That engine needs to get re-engineered before I buy one.” Just like I said earlier, sometimes these concerns aren't uncommon and have been echoed before, even by those who eventually grew to love the TRD Pro V6 after initially rejecting it.

On a more affirmative note, Dennis Owens praised his choice clearly and decisively, sharing, “I love my 2025 Toyota V6 twin turbo. People are driving them because they are quality and not junk. I drove junk for years. GM just doesn’t cut it anymore with me.” Dennis’s comment reflects a powerful shift happening across the truck world, one that’s highlighted in the stories of drivers who unexpectedly became fans of the new-generation Tundra. Even the off-road crowd has chimed in with their thoughts, and some were surprised at what the truck could handle after installing a lift kit and testing it in real-world conditions.

There’s something I’ve come to appreciate after reading enough stories like this: it’s not always the loudest opinion that carries the most weight. Sometimes it’s the quiet confidence of someone who’s been around trucks long enough to know when something just works. Lynd didn’t switch brands to make a statement, he switched because the numbers made sense. Although sure the truck was a grand more expensive, it delivered the feeling that backed it all up. In a space where brand loyalty runs deep, stories like his remind us that trust isn’t given, it's earned.

What We Can All Takeaway

The moral lessons we can draw from Lynd’s story are both practical and meaningful:

Your story about the ‘22 Tundra reliability forgot to mention that Toyota is replacing all the motors in their ‘22 & ‘23 Tundras due to a major engine defect. Approx 100,000 units. Their recall will probably be extended to include their ‘24 models. Too soon to know if any ‘25 models have bad engines. You should not call the ‘22 & newer Tundras reliable.

In the "Maintenance and Reliability" section of my article, I actually referenced another story I wrote on a Tundra owner dealing with this engine defect. I definitely understand what you're saying though about the reliability. I do think Toyota's proactive approach is giving customers some confidence in their trucks though, as they can count on Toyota to get the problem fixed and back on the road with the free engine replacement and even restarted warranty.

I own a 2002 Tundra 4.7L auto-trans, has 240K on it, never torn apart, only had preventative maintenance, and gets oil changed at 3K intervals (Yeah, I'm old-school "Oil's cheap; motors ain't). Living in the foothills of Colorado, 30mi S & W of Denver, we get SNOW, and "Mr. T" ALWAYS gets me where I need to go! I've had Toys' since 1969, from tiny to big, and they DON'T BREAK!

I recently purchased a used 22 tundra with 36k on the clock. It was a little bit of a shock on fuel as I was accustom to my corolla. Using the cruise control in town and letting the computer do it's thing and having a soft right foot will help your consumption. But if you want to unleash the horses you'll pay for it.....as you should. The power is there when you want it.

I've owned three Tundra truck. 2008, 2017, 2019. Still driving the 2019 Limited. Best truck I've ever owned. Before I drove Ford, Chevy and a 2005 Dodge. I liked the Dodge but not as much as the Toyota. I don't know anything about the V6 trucks. I have always driven V8's. I hope the Toyota people bring the 5 liter back before it is time for me get a new truck. I am retired and liked to be comfortable and don't care about mileage. Also, I love all that steel between me and the goober's on the highway.

In snowy cottage country Ontario, I swear by my 2015 1794 edition.
10 model years old, and zero problems.
The 5.7 L is a pig on gas, but have never been stuck anywhere.
280,000 Km (175K miles).
I've replaced:
Rotors @ 125K miles.
Battery.
Low & High transmission sensors.
Oil changes.
That's it.
Talked my wife into a 2018 Rav4, and she loves it.
Summer ride is a 2005 Lexus SC430, which runs like a top.
Toyota only in our driveway!

I have a 2003 Tundra V8 I love it very reliable truck wouldn't take nothing for it 326022 original miles luv my baby

I recently sold my original owner 2003 Limited and was just done with needing a truck. I hauled large loads of rock and drywall with ease. In fact it drove nicer because the 4x4 suspension was fairly stiff. General maintenance and no issues. Engine ran like day one and still didn't use oil. The 4 7 liter is bulletproof.

I also was Chevy person all my life just bought a Tundra Sr5 fully loaded.Switched because of the quality much better the Silverado is not a good product anymore did my homework and the Tundra was way better.

i cut my teeth on a 1980 Custom Deluxe 3 on the tree 6cyl, no frills Chevy. you could trace it's roots back to the 1930's straight six. A real truck. A real truck i sold for more than i paid for it (new) 12 years after purchase. NO web influencers mpg-shaming back then. A truck drank what it needed and that is STILL OK with me 45 years later. But GM changed. My 1985 Silverado, 180 degrees in luxury different from the C10, had a FOUR speed auto transmission. The fourth gear was an overdrive Chevy put in to SAVE gas. Shift lever position 4 cost me a $900 tranny repair when the OD lugged the V8 and the V8 shook the tranny apart. No internet to complain to. No comp from GM. Asked the svc manager how to fix it, he said, don't put the shift lever in 4. Whatta fix GM! 2012, first new truck i looked at, a Silverado, still overdriving, but now including a V8-4. TG for internet! Read about the scuffed cylinders and excessive oil consumption from cylinder deactivation, and shimmied over to Toyota Tundra. Suddenly it's 1980 again and life is good, a real truck with 100 percent reliability. 13 years later not a repair on the Tundra, ever. But today is different than 1980, the nits have multiplied a million-fold and now they nit-pick at fuel economy, on a full size 5000+ lb pickup truck. My inability to brag about fuel economy MPG on my trucks for 45 years has not driven me to the poorhouse. But GM's improvements for better fuel economy sure tried to put me there once upon a time, but nevermore.

Thanks for this, truly. It helps put in perspective just how much the quality of American trucks have decreased. I mean I've been hearing that for years, but seeing someone who experienced the golden age of American trucks just really helps put it together. Enjoy that Tundra!

Considering the massive engine recall and how many of these have already blown up, isn't it raw and unabashed fanboy brown-nosing to discuss all this amazing Toyota " quality" without being real about ALL the many quality control issues with this vehicle? Blind fanboy codependency on a puffed-up name seems to never go away. It's sickening.

Hey Joe I totally understand where you're coming from.
I don't mean to dismiss Toyota's issues at all. Sure they have their problems and I actually have an article discussing this recall and an owner's experience with it. I will say that even with these problems, most of the buzz and experiences I write around Toyota leans towards a general positive from most first hand owners. They still seem to prefer it over other brands.
