The S550e will be the first commercial application of a Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) system. This optional system will use technology known as Halo developed by electronics firm Qualcomm.
Motor Trend reports the system works by using two pads; a large charging pad on the floor that the vehicle parks over and another pad underneath the vehicle. From there, Halo uses resonant magnetic induction to provide power for the S550e's 8.7kW lithium-ion battery pack. Qualcomm claims the system operates at 90 percent efficiency.
Qualcomm has big plans for the Halo technology, including using it on highways to provide a way to EVs to charge on the go.
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S550e will go on sale sometime next year.
